personally I wouldn't bother bodging to that extent, if your going to repair later in year just treat the rust as best you can and stick glazing tape to overlap the rust. It's not pretty but easily removed and if you stick it well should keep the water out. I have used this as a temporary repair on my lower windscreen, holed fiberglass, and of course 6ft tears in polytunnels. Jobs a good un in about 15mins and dead easy to remove when needed, also cheap and available in different widths.
Don't waste time making it look pretty, it certainly won't look any worse.
