Hi
I have had a T3 1.7d 1987 converted panel van for over two years, and have been slowly getting round to carrying out mechanical jobs. The van has limited history so I have also been checking things. Even though the split charger was working OK, as far as I could tell (leisure battery charged and the starter did not discharge) I still checked the wiring etc with reference to that given in the club Wiki. My split charger had the wire from relay 86 connected to the ignition. The Wiki is a bit confusing as it mentions connecting to the ignition live and to the alternator warning light terminal (pin 11) in the dash.
Could someone please tell me which is correct - ignition or alternator warning wire?

Re: Wiring split chargers
Alternator. I had that prob and for some reason could never get it working wiring at dash end. I think it was Mocki that gave me the heads up on this. I just have a long piece of wire going to engine bay (use a stripped down unwanted lawn mower extension cable or similar) and steal the blue cable so you know what the wire is in future. Worked first time once I did that.

however I am even more confused when you say alternator and talk of a long wire to engine bay? Are you running a wire from the split charger 86 direct to the alternator blue wire terminal?

Re: Wiring split chargers
They can be wired up either way as long as the ignition feed is taken from the ignition load reduction circuit so that the two batteries are disconnected when cranking the engine. If it is wired so it cuts in only when the alternator is charging then pin 86 it is connected to the blue wire from the alternator to the dash warning lamp you can splice into it anywhere along it's length.
