Gas servicing - what do you do?

Post by iggi »

I was arranging to have the boiler serviced in my flat and thought, what about the campervan? Can I ask do you get the gas (I have a cooker and a fridge that run on gas) serviced, if so how often and is it expensive?
I live in Scotland if anyone has any recommendations!
Thank you :)

I think campervan and motorhome specialist sellers usually do it. like http://www.toddsmotorhomes.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; a bit far for you though.

Thank you for that.
Has got me thinking, surely caravans require the same kind of thing? More caravan sales places than campervan ones I think.

I'm in the same boat. Most GasSafe engineers I have called don't want to know (even though they say they do caravans) and the only local motorhome specialist wants £175!

I'm sure there must be some people out there who do this kind of work and know their way around a van but maybe they are a rare breed.

Ask at a local marina - narrow boats and canal cruisers have their gas installations checked every 4 years...

Bit far for most of you posters but we do it, and it is an annual thing for the large motorhomes, there is no legal requirement for van derived campers for gas checks but for your own peace of mind I suggest you have it done every few years.

Do yourselves a favour and check the orange gas line, you will find it is dated, they should be replaced every five years, at bit of soapy water around the gas joints with a paintbrush will let you know if they are leaking and if you have access to a gas manometer find the test point on your cooker or fridge and do a leakage test, must hold pressure, be it 28mbar, 30mbar, 37mbar or 50mbar for at least 15 minutes.

On boats tho they have to have a test point fitted to test for leaks etc. I did al the gas system on my Dads boat, some of the rules on boats are a bit strange, didnt help that the tester came out to check it all out, and cross threaded the test point back in creating a leak! A rather heated debate followed with the bloke!!

I've just been hunting around for someone to fix the gas fridge in my recently-bought camper.

I started off calling caravan suppliers with workshops - and each one said they're booked up until July. :(

I then tried using http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - this is the 'official' list of people to work on gas appliances of all sorts (the replacement to 'corgi').

While it gave me a decent list of people who claim to do work on caravans (what each company does displays in the company's listing), after phoning around ten of them, I gave up - not one of them would touch it, some saying they weren't certified to, and all the rest saying they don't do caravans (despite the listing saying they do).

In the end I found the website for Dometic (the replacement company for Electrolux) which sent me to http://www.dometicapproved.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for servicing and manuals.

Searching via my postcode, it only returned one entry, who is based miles away. But the guy was very helpful on the phone, and he's going to try to find time to see me the next time he's in Bristol (next week) so he doesn't have to drive out here just for me (so hopefully the price will reflect that). When I told him that the fridge works OK on 240v he sounded confident he could get it sorted. :)

So it's worth trying http://www.dometicapproved.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I reckon.

After some phone calls today found a company in the south west that will apparantly do the gas checks : - http://www.tourer-techs.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Not managed to speak to them but recommended by a local campervan dealer circa £90 for a habitation check.

Really interesting to hear how hard it is! I wonder does that mean I don't need to bother? (hopeful but deluded)
I might try the garage who sold me the van, perhaps they will know someone. I have a feeling the gas system has not been touched for a long long time (not the 9 years I've had it anyway)
