gearbox oil leak

Post by jtwhitestar »

Hi all
i had to change my clutch last week due to gearbox oil leak on in put shaft, i am no mechanic but it was something i wanted to do my self.
i put in a new clutch kit spigot bearing (old one was a shell) and a input seal. job done with a bit of swearing i thought, but no i still have oil leaking into the bell housing. i changed the oil when doing it with 3.5 litres my only guess i that the input shaft is worn
any ideas
its a jx 5 speed just to let you know

your damaged spigot bearing has allowed the shaft to have too much motion and it has picked up the oil thrower behind the seal and worn that and possibly worn the case too, without a correctly fitting and positioned oil thrower the oil seal can't cope with the oil load as you have found; this normally happens when a numpty fits a 1.9TD or TDi out of a car into a bus without fitting a spigot bearing, about 350 miles later the clutch starts slipping, and if ignored the damage is sufficient sometimes to require a replacement bellhousing (the oil thrower is part of it and not available seperately)

I would always advise removing the bellhousing if there is an input seal leak, so as to check the oil thrower and because it makes fitting the new seal a lot easier, always use the Elring seal not the crap thing that GSF and JK sell which only costs 60p from a seal supplier and fill the lips of the seal with moly or multipurpose grease

if it's only just picked up the oil thrower it may be possible to rebond it to the bellhousing with a suitable 2 pack adhesive/compound once degreased

does it centre on the castellated lip or can it be moved excentrically, if it centres then yes it can be bonded, as to wear internally I can't tell from the photos, I measure , you want less than 1mm total diamater difference between shaft and inside of oil thrower ime
