Sitting at 60mph cutting out (a bit)

Post by jimthedrummer »

Hi guys...

Iv had a few problems recently with my van i have a 1988 1.9 water cooled... i think its sorted now, Running well mainly.

Except when on the motor way if i sit at 60mph for about 5 min the van will chug and feel like its cutting out so i can drop down to 50 and sit there happily... (But panic all the to wherever il be going to)

any thoughts?

i had recently had idoling problems and before that cutting ALOT... so iv replaced the coil, sparks, dizzy, new fuel filter, cleaned carb and things are mainly good..

a few of things that are 'cough' technally wrong still...

* my breather pipe has seen better days saggy creased cracking.... will this affect it?
* oil light is on... dipstick level is fine but looks like leaking (while running)
* Temp gage isnt working (or the clock so its always 9.50)
* My exhaust is erm LOUD and has a bit of a hole in it..

Phew well if your still reading thanks!!
if anyone has any thoughts on the 60mph let me know... or where to get a cheap exhaust :D

thanks alot !!

Jim :ok

Have you thought about repairing the exhaust or having it repaired, if it's blowing just in one place..

Exhaust repairs

Exhaust suppliers

It is probably a very good idea to clean up the exhaust act, before diagnosing much further, as this might/can cause a weak mixture itself that might/can cause poor running, overheating (engine not coolant), loss of power, even misfiring.. probably not completely cutting out though. An air leak on the inlet side would make this even worse.

So iv replaced the coil, sparks, dizzy, new fuel filter, cleaned carb and things are mainly good..

You have replaced i.e changed all those parts?

Dizzy and dizzy cap brand new?

Air filter clean or changed recently?

Sounds like fuel filter but you've done that, maybe worth checking the fuel pump isn't a bit weak, and there's usually a tiny gauze filter pushed into the fuel inlet stub on the carb that could be a bit gritty, and then yet another gauze on the pick up in the tank, hope it's not that as not terribly accesible. With all that filtration you'd think the carbs would be clean enough to eat your dinner off.

? worn fuel pump pushrod - should be 100mm exactly if not full length then at high revs it won't pump enough fuel to keep up, easy to check :ok

Fuel starvation, does have the hallmarks of it. As highlghted, clean cone filter etc and as Aidan suggested, make sure fuel pump is actually keeping up. Don't rule out air filter either - could be sucking through a straw at full throttle openings

Hi,

Had exactly this on mine, was fuel pump. don't ignore it though, or you may just find that one day it suddenly stops working altogether.

I bought a new one from GSF which has lasted 5 months, so if you do decide the pump is at fault I'd advise going Brickwerks for the new one. Don't whatever you do get one from Just Kampers, as the nozzles foul the oil tower.

Good luck getting it sorted,

Cheers,

Alex
