Re: Gearbox
If you've had to have the engine oil changed for you then possibly best to get it done professionally
Rather begs the question Why are you putting it into 1st while moving ? When the engine/box is cold the move from 1st to 2nd can be an acquired skill but using 1st to slow down ?

Re: Gearbox
And what exactly is wrong with using gears to slow down?

1st ?! On a 5 speed 1st is really low. Brake pads is cheaper than a gearbox ... trust me I know.

If you feel able then yes.
Once changed then see if you still have the problem.
If you do then I would say unless you can live with it, start saving up for another gearbox.
As a footnote
I don't use 1st unless I'm stationary.
The ratios are one reason.
The syncromesh gears would be working very hard.... brakes are cheaper as Ian suggests..
Same reason why I don't hold a two tonne van on the clutch.

Re: Gearbox
Could it be the gearbox linkage worn or is that something else?
or does it need realigning?

Re: Gearbox
1st is from standstill only. I work up and down the box constantly (way I was taught) and the lowest you can go if working down and crawling is 2nd. Thats the way it is. In fact once warm, unless you're sat at a T junction on a steep hill you never need 1st. I only use that gear from stone cold. Always pull away in 2nd the rest of the time - much smoother pull away and leaves you a bit more time to move into 3rd - ideal for roundabouts. You'll move two yards (if that) in first.
Changing down to slow down is good practice as you're always in the correct gear for any eventuality but 1st for standstill only.
And yes, a gearbox oil change advisable if you have no info on last time it was done.
