update on starter motor problem ,ive ended up going down to gsf in swindon and bought a new one ,my thinking being ive got the money and not planning any trips out soon so may as well bite the bullet .
they charged me £120 !!!! but then get £40 back in return for old starter so £80 really ,also after reading about replaceing the bush in the bell housing it turns out that this new starter (901vgo150) has it built into the casing so no need ,will try and fit at weekend all new to me this mechanicing lark but thouroughly enjoying it thanks to the knowledge and kind advice of you guys!,
will let you know how i get on,

new starter is on now and all went pretty well really ,didnt have to get under the van to do it either all just about accesable from engine hatch, starts first time now ,only thing i have noticed is that the yellow led on the dash seams to take a bit longer to go out ....... not really sure why this is ?
off to gsf now to get my £40 back

Have you accidentally disconnected the wire from the temp sender that controls the glow plug circuit? Most likely

Re: 89 1.6td starting battery/starting probs??
hi there ,
left the van for a week turned the key and nothing !!! b i also bought a solar panel to trickle charge the battery and has been sat on the dash all week ! tested battery and reading 7volts!!
so to recap :
have got rid of old knackered lesuire battery and relay behind drivers seat .
have replaced starter motor with new one .
replaced relay behind drivers seat .
previously charged battery to full from about 7v and it held its charge in the house ounce charged tested over 24hrs and dropped hardly anything.
just jumped it and started first time reading 14v at battery when engine running ,i supose i will have to rule out a fubard starter batt again by chrging it up again and testing it i supose
sounds like a drain somewhere but why would it start draing the battery all of a sudden ,its been fine for the last 1 half years ???
