trebormint wrote:Thanks for that advice, it does work out cheaper at £296.00 but we're 2.5 hrs drive to Newhaven & only 20mins to Portsmouth. I also have to consider the convenience of arriving in France at 8 in the morning if we sail from Portsmouth the previous evening. We would get a good days driving in & get to our first camp site in daylight.
It does seem to be the same old story....convenience costs! I'll probably go with what suits us best & not get too hung up on the price

.

Indeed, convenience is well worth paying for, obviously within reason. Were coming down from merseyside so the southern ports are all a fair old distance away. like you we try to sail to a French port which isnt too far from our destination. Generally this means we avoid Dover/Calais as most places are easier to get to from western ports(and as mentioned it means we can avoid the grim M25!).

Once weve picked a couple of sites we'll book the ferry, probably to Dieppe. Were looking at Camping Monsabert and Azay Le Rideau, both in the Loire area. Where you headed?[/quote]

Loire region is beautiful John, especially if you like the amazing Chateaux which scatter throughout. We went there a few years ago during the worst August weather France had ever experienced, (rained everyday for almost two weeks! And cold?!). But this time we're venturing further south to the Pyrenees & then onto the coastal areas near Bordeaux.
I will book the crossing from Portsmouth to Le Havre with LD tomorrow & not dwell on the cost too much, convenience & time is a greater factor for me.

Now Norfolkline are quoting about £80 return to France for July/August. They were quoting £150 in November. That is much better.

Over the years its been very difficult to predict when ferry prices will rise/fall. Ferry companies dont seem to have a set pattern. It will be interesting this year with the ongoing economic situation to see whether there are any offers around (ala the NF line offer). Ive found as a rule of thumb the closer you get to the sailing date the higher the price (at least beyond March/April for summer bookings)). Having said that its quite some time away to peak season so who knows what going to happen. Ive been stung before by waiting.

Don't be daft - I knew had received a few emails like the one I posted other last few months then that popped up in my inbox and I thought it should be shared. Send us a PM with details of your booking and I'll have a chat with Heather - you might have company for a while (if you want it)

I cant get it under £170 return which makes it not worth the extra effort of Dover Calais. Hmmmm I must try harder!

I dont want to go even further away to Dunkirk on Norfolk line either.
