I also have to consider the convenience of arriving in France at 8 in the morning if we sail from Portsmouth the previous evening. We would get a good days driving in & get to our first camp site in daylight.
It does seem to be the same old story....convenience costs! I'll probably go with what suits us best & not get too hung up on the price

Indeed, convenience is well worth paying for, obviously within reason. Were coming down from merseyside so the southern ports are all a fair old distance away. like you we try to sail to a French port which isnt too far from our destination. Generally this means we avoid Dover/Calais as most places are easier to get to from western ports(and as mentioned it means we can avoid the grim M25!).
Once weve picked a couple of sites we'll book the ferry, probably to Dieppe. Were looking at Camping Monsabert and Azay Le Rideau, both in the Loire area. Where you headed?[/quote]
Loire region is beautiful John, especially if you like the amazing Chateaux which scatter throughout. We went there a few years ago during the worst August weather France had ever experienced, (rained everyday for almost two weeks! And cold?!). But this time we're venturing further south to the Pyrenees & then onto the coastal areas near Bordeaux.
I will book the crossing from Portsmouth to Le Havre with LD tomorrow & not dwell on the cost too much, convenience & time is a greater factor for me.
