The "G" means it was made in Graz ...like all Syncros

BTW I doubt very much that they made vehicles for the German army without VIN numbers. My ex army van (1990) most definitily has one

The vehicles without VINs were made from parts left over and sent to the German Military. This happened after production end in 1992. This information came from VW!

The letter you get from VW in the Uk is a "heritage certificate" and it comes from the Homolgation dept, it's a headed paper letter with a date of manufacture, thats it.
A birth certificate from the Automuseum is something completely different, it gives a lot more information.
You can get a "Urkunde" from the "Urkundegenerator" thing on their website.

Very... a dedicated man!

Any votes for who's got the Syncro with the least M-Codes

Quite amazed they didn't make the gear-knob an M-code item and just round off the lever ...

every van has m codes even if there are none shown on the white sticker because they are built into the type number for different markets, you need the build information from VW which I managed to get for Beaker and it showed like 20 odd M codes but it was a base uk spec hi-top panel van - a lot of them were obvious like rhd, speedo in mph, syncro, hitop, etc..but included the drop down front wheel carrier, 205s and a few other nice bits and a couple I've never decoded but all of which were standard for that model, model year and market

Interesting. Dave and I both have vans starting with a 7 as well. His finishes with a '0' and mine finishes with a '1'. His van was the one trundling down the line in front of mine! How close can you get!

Its 35 yoyo's though....

and why does the site say they cant tell you the orginal engine number because of data protection

"Because of data protection we are not allowed to inform you about the original engine-number. However, we are able to proof if the engine number you will give us corresponds to the chassis number of your vehicle."

seems a bit odd to me - surely data protection is about personal data (and yes I know that VW's are people to some)

Yes, it is €35, but it's about £35 for a crap letter from VW in Milton Keynes that tells you much less.
If you have bought, or imported something that doesn't have any papers, or like My Iltis that was left here by Ze Germans, and sat around for 14 odd years forgotten about it's either one or the other, you need some sort of proff from the manufacturers to prove it's age to be able to register the vehicle.
I know when it was made, because I am a nerd and I deciphered the plate under the bonnet but sadly the DVLA won't accept this!

This is a Birth Cert issued by the Museum in Dieselstrasse, Wolfsburg.

There is a second sheet with the remaining options but not all are mentioned.

So yours sat at the factory for well over a year before being sold/shipped. I wonder what the lead times are these days on the T5 with all this 'last-minute/just in time' supply chains.
Love the idea that a lock on the glove-box was seen as a 'extra'!
