The last Syncro ..... Update

Post by syncropaddy »

Some months ago I bought a 1993 registered T25 Syncro Van as a project. It was registered on 20/12/1993 but didn't receive its papers until 05/01/1994. So I though Id try and find out if this was one of the last RHD Syncro Vans ever built so I e mailed some of the nice people I met at Syncro 25 to see if they could help and I got a very interesting reply. It reads .....

Your van was built between 31.05.1992 and 30.06.1992. There were other VIN numbers after your van, approx. 7300 that were built between then and the end of 1992 (mainly 2WD but some Syncro). They also built some vans with the leftover parts, without a VIN number for the German military. That means that you have one of the last Syncros but not THE last one. There are no documents about THE last one that has been built. The red Syncro that is located in the Puch Museum in Graz was also built in the middle of 1992, but its VIN number is definitely NOT the last one, it has only been declared as last one.

This, to my mind, throws some light on the question as to why there are no official numbers for the total Syncro Production as there were some made with no records. Interesting too, that 'the last Syncro' in fact isnt the last Syncro and its possible that the real 'last Syncro' is a German Army vehicle with no VIN ..... which means that we probably never know where it is or even if its still alive!
Interestingly my van was made in the last month of official production so Im still very keen to trace its actual birthday. My feeling is that all of the other vans that were built after official production ended are probably left hand drive so there is, currently, a good chance that my van or David's van (as his was in the same batch) is the last RHD Syncro.

How cool is that?

thought this may help a wee bit, i cant believe they would not give chassis numbers to the last military ones, only if they were never used on public roads!! i suggested at syncro 25 to find the oldest and youngest syncro to a few people (not us syncronauts)but it must of fell on deaf ears, or was lost in translation.

and i know there was a prototype there but it would of been fun to find those vehicles.

My Syncro is an M 18000, and I have a letter from VW stating that the body shell was manufactured on 07/10/1991.

On that list the chassis number says it's May to June?

Thanks for that. I saw something similar on the Brickyard which was what got this whole thing started. I was given the name of a vehicle historian at the VW Museum in Dieselstrasse, Wolfsburg who knows the answer to these things so I mailed him today with as much of the information I could.

Have to say that at the moment I'm quite exited ......

Is that one of those official 'Birth Certs' that you can buy from the Museum? I have one of those for my Red Syncro Multivan

That gives me a manufacture date of 31.07.91 which seems about right for the date of registration.

What does the 'G' mean?
