Right, after some great advise from you guys (especially Aiden- thank you), I realise I need to have my gearbox repaired/recon'd, which I'll sort out when I've
found the time to get the box out (and got the money together!!!)
I would say I'm reasonably mechanically knowledgeable, and the "3 spanner" jobs as they show in Haynes manuals are
within my capabilities.
So, any advice on getting the box out? Dos/Don'ts etc. much appreciated.

Straightforward but my tip is to have at least a couple of trolley jacks (big uns ideally) as a gearbox is damned heavy. Remove driveshafts at gearbox end only, support gearbox. remove nuts/bolts where it fastens to engine, including starter, then slowly remove nose bolts. It needs to be moved towards front of van to free it, but keep plenty of support under it. Big lumps of wood are handy too. Easy to get out, harder to put in!
You'll be able to handle it though. Helps to have a mate to help refit it - plus heaps of tea to break up the "Will this thing EVER go in????" routine.
As for starter, I find its not worth removing, just unbolt it and tie it up out of the way. Do disconnect battery before starting work!

I've had the box out of are van more than once or twice and i'm not an expert by any means my tip take your time it's not a race. There is a small water pipe that goes from the stermofat houseing it's about 15cm long be cearfull coz the houseing is quite hard to replace if it gets broken

Before you get carried away with all the above movements you must do one thing. Get a bit of 4x2 and place across the top of your engine hatch, and throw a ratchet strap around your engine and around the 4x2. This will stop the engine falling out and crushing your head when you take the gear box off.

basically a bit of wood or two plus an used upper ball joint and some 6mm threaded bar bent to suit, allows one person to do the job in relative safety, having had a 65kg syncro box land ontop of me once I made this so it didn't happen again, broke the original cos it was blockboard rather than ply, made another out of ply, still gets used regularly
