engine code needed

Post by Gus »

Dear all

The engine in my 1986 T25 died on the very last day of a 4000-mile grand tour of Europe.

My mechanic has given me a good price for putting in a new engine. However he needs to know the relevant engine code in order to buy in another suitable engine.

The engine code on the current unit has been filed off for some reason (can anyone suggest why that might be, btw?), so we don't know what code to look for.

The current engine is not the original. The mechanic thinks it is from a Golf. On the registration document it says it is 1600 cc however another mechanic thinks it is 1.9. The engine code is not written on the registration doc btw.

Looking at the wiki attached to this site, that would seem to suggest that engine code 1Y is a safe bet... Or could we choose from any of the engine codes on this list?

Any help very much appreciated!

Gus

if it's diesel then the capacity is cast on the block, ie 1.6 or 1.9 about several inches high on the nearside somewhere that'll be a start
if the pump part numbers cans be read off, the vw and or bosch ones that'll be a guide

turbo or non turbo ? if turbo what type of turbo

pictures will help there's them that can recognise pumps and manifolds by sight

Many thanks for responses.

I'm not sure if it is a 'derv' engine - not familiar with this term - how can I tell?

Here are a couple of pictures - maybe someone can tell me what code this engine is, just by looking at it? The close-up picture shows where the code was, before it was filed off

Cheers

Gus

P.S. pretty sure it's non-turbo.

yes it's diesel (derv) and that's not where the engine number was stamped, it's stamped on the block underneath that big rubber hose above the oil cooler below number 3 injector

Thanks for that, I'll have another look... can't believe my garage wasn't able to find - doesn't bode well for the job... Also can't believe I forgot to say it was diesel in my original posting!

Many thanks - I will look for an AAZ then.

Impressed that you were able to identify the engine by sight!

Cheers
