Probably just a spacer strip about 1" thick to set the gap between bottom of lever edges and detents in the detent box under the cab. Require Bentley Manual or VW Service Manual (G/C)
Gear-arm at rear into box is set in neutral but across to R/1st posn (depending on type of box), gap measured and centre UJ spline joint adjusted to suit

But only would be required if its been disassembled or slipped (unlikely)... so do read on

Read the Wiki on g/c (theres a lot) you can't shortcut and just assume it's one thing or another.. for s start theres probably quite a lot of wear in various sections of the system, reducing tjis with new bushes can transform the g/c. Usually start at the back and reduce wear and check settings working forward.

thanks for lnfo,it doesn't bother me (the gear change)but the nieces chap insists that there is a tool that goes over the linkage that allows you to set the selector but can't remember exactly what it was like? :?

Maybe the reason peeps took some interest was they know that if someone finds difficulty with the change, it is often best to find out why, before a yet another 5-speed box needs a £000? rebuild...

This might be relevant, or not, as Aidan says ... Gbox lube level warning (no service record/old vehicles)

There probably was such a tool in VW workshops at one time, or an in-house one where he worked, but it's not common to know that, or to need one to check/reset or smarten up the selection mechanism. It is so long, multi-jointed & multi-bushed, that it isn't difficult to see that a few bushes and some lube are usually the answer, rather than any attempt to fiddle with the alignment.

In the Bently it says use 90 degree sheet metal angle piece of 3mm thickness between reverse gear stop and shift rod.

So by the look of it there never was a tool( otherwisw the tool number would be quoted).
And that would only work if you have the old type reverse gear stop with the nylon cover which are usually missing or damaged.

Add to that that even VW tech in Germany cant find here or there of the nylon covered reverses stop anywhere in their data(yet the pic in the bently/Ekta/Haynes all show the nylon covered one...go figure).

Hi

I was having trouble with the gear shift on my lhd T25 especially after I changed the clutch, I could not get 1st gear very easily and reverse was a pig too.

I ordered a gear shift bearing repair kit from Brickwerks.
real easy to fit and certainly made a big difference, nice easy changes now definitely worth doing.

Cheers Jay :ok

Exactly... what matters is what's worn, then see if any adjustment is necessary, and that's how I remember the spec and tool.. very 'ad-hoc' :!:

Don't order any repair kits until you determine what is most worn, could be that big front ball joint the lever goes through, or not.. often somedink simpler at back
