Clutch Replacement

Post by Realize »

Hi everyone

I have a 2ltr Aircooled Westy 1981 and the clutch has failed.
I have changed one on a bay window I just wanted to know of any pitfalls to watch out for and how easy it is for a competent DIY mechanic on a T3.

Apart from the Clutch friction and pressure plate and the thrust bearing what else is worth changing??

Any special Tools needed?

Cheers guys.

Very similar to a bay, buy a decent tool for the driveshaft bolts.
Look very carefully at the spigot shaft bearing and perhaps replace the starter motor support bush.
Clean and check the earth cable on the front mount
look carefully at the starter cables especially the trigger solenoid spade (best opportunity to solder a new one on when the box is out)
might also be a good time to change the gearbox oil 3.5litres GL4 75W-90

And if the driveshaft sideplates (on the gearbox) leak - do those too while gearbox is out. Cheap enough and all in the WIKI.

Moly grease the CV joints and replace any cheesy CV bolts, clean and regrease the earth strap mounts, check and remake any furry starter motor terminals, oil the oilite starter bush in the bellhousing if definately OK and not being replaced.

Can you explain why they both need to come out, can't the clutch be changed with just engine out?

Engine stays where it is. Much easier to drop the gearbox than unplumb an engine

For clutch - just gearbox. No one said both come out.

Its heavy work (gearbox certainly is and ideally you want two trolley jacks). All you're doing essentially is supporting gearbox, removing starter, bolts between engine and gearbox, front gearbox mount bolts, driveshafts, gear linkage, clutch mechanism (be it cable or hydraulic), reversing light switch.

Lower gearbox, remove old clutch etc etc and then refit. You'll need some support for engine to take stress off engine mounts but it won't actually fall out with gearbox removed.
