only 3.5ltr ?

Post by matt brighton »

Hi all......

Drained n Changed the gearbox oil today on my 1982 t25 1.6d non turbo.

I Made sure it was level - using a spirit level - and using cooking measuring jug added a carefully measured 3.5ltr of oil.

It didnt flow out of the filler plug so added another 250ml..... still not reached the filler plug

Then measured I what came out to be almost 4ltrs.......... !

What should I go by ? - the measured 3.5 ltrs of oil in ..........or should I fill till it reaches and flows out of the filler plug ?

Either way - the frothy brown "water" that came out compared to the golden new oil I put it- I cant have done any harm....

Thanks for any replies

I fill up with gearbox oil until it starts to run out of the filler plug. There are threads on here about this subject most agree on this.Use GL4 spec and not GL5 ensure correct viscosity .

Re: only 3.5ltr ? & wrong oil !

Post by matt brighton »

Thanks for the reply Camper,

I now know I have put the wrong oil in EP 80-90 (GL5) so will be draining and refilling with GL4 as soon as I get a chance.

There have been "debates" on other forums as to if the ep addatives it actually do harm and attack the bronze bushes........ but given the cost of a new box not really worth the risk as I intend to keep the camper I have for a long time

Regards

Matt

I need to go and buy some oil tomorrow to do a complete change on my gearbox but is this suitable 980AA0660 (gsf part number)?

Or is there something more suitable at GSF?

This thread has prompted me to get mine changed (DG with an earlier DK box) .

From a snip on another thread I found
"gsf semi synthetic Fuchs Titan 98048A 4 litres about £20
or any good GL4 spec 75w/90 or 80w/90 gear oil"

Off to find some in the local motor factors then :)

Funnily enough, I could not find much in our wiki re gearbox oil and the changing of.
Nearest was = https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ge ... earbox_oil" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but that thread doesn't give much info on less "exotic" oils.

Perhaps an article on this might be a good idea ( Aiden :ok )

I did mine today (after reading this thread and saying to myself, stop thinking about doing it, for the last 2 years, and DO IT !)

4 Ltrs of GL4 from Europarts = £16

Halfords were out of stock of the required 17mm hex tool, so I had to buy a set of 6 @ £17
(anyone want to buy them, used only once :) )

Level ground, drained what looked like about 3 Ltrs out. (warm and left for 20 mins to drain)
Condition of oil did not look too bad, a bit black but no lumps !
The magnet had a minimal amount of soft deposits on it, again no hard bits or lumps, so good news there :)

On re-filling, using the hose pipe method through the wheel arch, didn't bother with the funnel as the spout on the bottles fitted neatly onto the hose pipe, enabling me to squirt it in = quicker than dribbling it in via a funnel :)

I only got 3ltrs in before it started coming out of the filler hole.
From what I have read and what the Haynes says it should be 3.5Ltrs ?
(although mine is a DK box from an earlier Aircooled engine if that makes any difference)

Hope it's OK ?

3.5 litres on an empty box but you can't fully drain it so 3 litres and overflowing is good and full if level
