Tappets
Can anyone tell me what the settings are on a watercooled 1900 and if its not a totally stupid question,looking from above which are the inlet and which are exhaust?

settings are zero lash (zero gap) then 1 1/2 turns in at TDC compression stroke for both inlet and exhaust.
some set it at 1/2 turn in from zero, some use 1 turn in... Bently and haynes say two turns in, there's a lot of discussion on this

the lifters should be pumped up with a short run and a warmish engine
if you look at the manifold you can see the inlets (both together?)
and the exhausts are... on the out side where the exhaust comes out of the head!
unless you have a reconditioned engine with solid lifters, there should be a sticker on your pancake duct that tells you if it has solid lifters
if you search on this forum (tech) there's loads of info.. or in the Archive

By the way the reason Im asking is that I fitted a spring loaded pushrod tube as I had a seal leaking. after I reassembled the rocker gear I found it was running very badly and the two plugs on the side I was working on were cold and wet and the opposite were dry and warm.
All plugs ok and recently replaced as were the leads. Admittedly the fuel was very low and I had to go to the garage for a can full.
When I looked for clearance at the tappets there was none.I wondered if the pushrods were seated properly or were not in the cups.
Removing either of the plug leads on the left side made no difference to the running of the motor.
It also started with a bang.

Seating those pushrods requires a torch and a well squinted eye, it's one of those jobs that is much easier to get wrong than right. Once you've done them check them all, they quite often fall out while you're positioning the others

Your not kidding yozza,its like trying to juggle soot!
