Thanks to all you roller heads out there, all the tips have made the last two weeks superb. Started over easter on my tailgate opted away from the washing machine as wife likes it silver. Got mix wrong a couple of times - flatted it off got weather conditions wrong - flatted it off. Removed everything tried as many different ways to mask off or lift rubbers but I got there. In the end I think along with others in the street think the it looks great, cannot wait to attack the rest over the coming ,overcast but still, few weeks (ideal weather conditions) with the best (not worth buying anything else) B&Q rollers. Finally any tips on the best wax/polish as I have never owned a car or van that responded to polish. CHEERS!

I've found that once you've got the finish up to reasonable standard, all you need is very fine wet and dry (1200 or what they used to call 'flour' paper) to just take minor peaks off it. Best done by hand and hardly touch it really, avoiding edges so you don't go through, then T-cut. Having said that, the coat I did last week was so close to near perfect I'm not sure I actually want to bother. Chickenkoop suggested I go that extra mile as an example so guess I will, but the hot sun is really helping bake the paint right now. :D

Not exactly recommending it you understand, but this time around I used one of those rectangular sanders (ALDI) - wet. Obviously you don't want water in the sander (and definately have it on a protected extension lead with a trip) but you can keep the base wet and the panels soaped down and it makes easy work of flatting. Made a massive difference to the finish I got this time - just a tip. The abrasive clogs up fast dry and if you do it all by hand you'll be there forever and won't spot any low areas either. Was staggered by the difference it made. You have to go easy near corners and edges but otherwise you just follow the contours with the sander. Still takes a couple of days (or one real slog of a day) but definately quicker. Also makes mincemeat of body filler that way too if you keep soaping down..

Oh and for goodness sake wear latex gloves if you're not alergic otherwise it'll be a month before you get the paint out of your fingernails.

Hello to all, i phoned rust-oleum on Monday to ask about a shade of Red that i was after and the guy on the other end ( Richard ) said he would send me a colour chart, the chart came today and is very good as it show's the colours/shades very well, give them a call and get one as it may well help you make your decision on what colour you need or want :D

I've finally found somewhere in Germany that sells Rustoleum online, so I'm going to order some. I'm wanting to do the van white again but with a black roof so I'd like to ask you guru's how much I should be ordering as it's not cheap over here at 61 Euros for the 2.5lt tin. The 750ml tin is 21 Euros. So would I be right in estimating that to have enough..

1 x 750ml tin of black for the roof.
1 x 2.5lt tin of white and another 750ml tin of white just in case.

Do you reckon this will be plenty??

Cheers.

Yes, DO practice first and you want a mix thats not like toffee and not like water - think evaporated milk and you won't be far off. Refer to WIKI if need be as I think I've covered it all now. https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Bo ... r_painting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

WOW! that is one brilliant finish and from the video you cannot tell it's hand painted at all - VERY impressive. Does anyone know how many coats of paint there are on that Stag and how long it took to get it that good?
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!
