Yes. The new panel only comes 3/4 way up inside the u-channel. I cut the original panel a little below the u-channel, so leaving the complete u-channel in place, with a little of the lower panel as well. So the new panel sits on top of that, hence my overlap comment. Then seam welded from the outside along to top edge of the new panel (in the middle of the u-channel) and further down below the u-channel on the inside. That probably gives an overlap of an inch or so. Like I said, seems strong enough - better than the rusty original at least!

Filler on the outside to cover the ground down weld - made a tool with the same u-profile of this channel and used that smooth filler in the right profile. Brush-on seam sealer on the inside edge - neatness not an issue here!
