this shouldn't be full of water should it?

Post by TimR »

On a check of my hoses on Sunday I came across this rubber shrouded sensor on the left below the thermostat housing.

When I removed the rubber shroud it was very wet inside so I'm assuming that something is wrong.

Having scoured the Haynes manual I think that this may be a temperature sensor for the inlet manifold heater, is this correct? If it isn't working due to the water leakage what effect would this have on the running of the engine?

I have a 1.9 DG WBX engine with a Pierburg 2E3 carb.
I'm guessing this sensor may need to be refitted and if so , it probably makes sense to replace it, can anyone tell from the picture whether this is the correct item that I should order from Mr Baxter please?

you are correct as to what it is, it means that the engine starts and runs better when cold, you can check wether it's working by measuring the resistance across the two terminals when cold and when warm approx 4-6k ohms at 5degrees c, 2 to 3 at 20 degrees 2-400 ohm when engine warm 80 degrees
where the water came from that got in the boot, could be just from the road, or through the sensor o ring seal in the housing, it's pretty unlikely it's actually through the sensor
i'd check the resistance and if ok get the contact cleaner on the connections and refit the boot
