Pierburg pipes and wires

Post by glyn »

My van had a Df engine which was changed to a DG engine but the previous owner didn't change the carb so i have just changed the solex carb for a pierburg(thanks tinman), so now i need to suss out where the pipes and wires go, so does anyone have a picture or diagram of the pierburg in situ, i do have a Haynes maual but unsurprisingly it bloody useless. I basically need to find out where the choke pipes go,where the throttle body heater wire goes, where the wire on the choke body goes and where the vacuum pipes go. I have looked in the wiki's and on t'internet but found nothing so any help would be good.

Hi Glyn

For wires to the pierburg 2e3 carb check out the pics in the ( disconnected wires ) post i posted on the 9th nov 09.

It may be of help, it may not. Pics are courtesy of kevtherev and i found them to be a great help.

Leigh.

glyn I have some phjotos on my pc of a 3e refurb I did some time ago. If you are still looking for something let me know and I will dig them out

on mine, looking from above when stood at rear of van:

left hand vacuum pipe at vehicle front of corb goes to distributor
right hand vacuum pipe goes to rearmost vacuum pipe on air filter box
throttle body heater wire connects to any live supply in engine bay which is activated by ignitiion switch, likewise choke heater coil wire

there is a good (imho)haynes manual on popular carbs which inlcudses this one I got a copy form the local library

hope this helps

Cheers

OK to recap...

you have
a manifold heater .........Thicker pink wire that disappears under the manifold
a fuel cut off solenoid
and a choke heater

the manifold heater will be the larger red/pink wire, with a white connector and needs to be through the sender switch( from thermostat housing on late) and relay..

the fuel cut out solenoid, the choke heater and the other black wire all loop into the same ignition live (black) wire on spade connectors. two female and a male

Image

here is the thicker wire with the white connector

Image

and here connected to the cut off solenoid and choke heater

yellow connector on left -
seems to sit snugly into idle cut off solenoid (?)

yellow connector on right - with a red bottom to it -
isnt connected up to anything -

carb seems to run ok - around 900 kevrevspm

wondering if it needs to be connected up? - wire to it dissapears under bottom of carb -

Ah I see,
if you take another look at this

Image

you can see that it is connected to the other yellow connector (cut off solenoid)

indeed!

who needs haynes manual - when you've got photos as above!

right - glyn - you might find the wiki diagram useful - just to get an idea of where the different hoses and connectors go - and then go through the revs photos and match them up -

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Fu ... oded_views" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

kevrev - i'm sorted thanks to your really helpful info -

my yellow connector to cut off solenoid has 2 black wires coming off it - 1 to lh side of engine bay - wiring - and the other to my dangling unconnected yellow connector -

Image

Image

as its reach was only 2 or 3 inches i hunted round anything within reach to see waht it could connect onto - and found this red connector tucked almost under the carb - looking as equally lost as the yesllow connector - it has a black wire going to the back of the carb -

Image

what seems like an obvious join -

Image

everybody happy in camden town!

does this feel/look/sound right to you?

took the van out for a run - and everything fine -

any idea what it might actually do?

I presume you mean the choke heater?

When the engine is cold a flap (choke flap) is pulled across the primary barrel of the carb to limit the amount of air going in. This is pulled across by a bi-metallic spring in a drum to the side of the carb. As the engine warms up the bi-metallic spring slowly unwinds moving the choke flap to the upright or open position. The spring is heated by coolant running passed the back of the choke drum and a heater coil that is fed with a live feed.

Once the engine has fired the choke drum is partially pulled back by the pull-down unit. Because the engine initially fires best when completely strangled from air the choke flap is pulled completely across the carb barrel, but after the engine has fired it requires more air. The pull down unit is a vacuum diaphragm with a rod connected to the choke flap. Once the engine fires vacuum is fed to the diaphragm and pulls on the rod, which pulls on the choke, opening it a set amount.

The third item is the fast idle system. On a Pierburg Carb, the idle is held up artificially by a large spring on the throttle spindle. As the engine warms up a component called a Waxstat fights against this spring until the throttle rests against the idle control plunger on the opposite side of the carb to the choke.

I hope this explains the magical Auto choke a little clearer :D

I did look in the wiki pics but they don't actually show where things connect, i,m doing the job tomorrow so hopefully i'll get it sorted, although i can't test how well it runs because i'm waiting for water pipes from JK so i've got the fuel tank off(i know i didn't need to but i thought i might as well get it all cleaned up and painted plus it will make fitting the new pipes easier)
