i have had no sucess with it , but perhaps thats me.
36 relays are not a problem to get hold of , just could not get them to work on my van!
Maybe that was a bit ambiguous, you can't fit a 36 relay without doing a bit of wireing, there is no suitable socket for it. Wireing it in isn't really that complex though and shouldn't take more tools than a thin screwdriver (for pushing out terminals that are in the wrong place) and some insulated female blades.
Get one of them clip on aux relay bases that go above the main relays from a scrap car, try and get as much wireing on it as possable and make sure you have at least 2 big terminals and 1 thin terminal wired up.
Wire it so one of the big terminals on the relay (can't remember what its called, probubly 15, X or 86 - don't have a 36 to hand at the moment) on the relay to terminals G2 or G5 on the back of the fusebox, or the ignition if you have an early van, (if both are already used try G1 or G3) - they take standard female blades, nothing fancy (insulate them of course).
Wire the other big terminal probubly called 31 or 85 to the door light circuit.
Wire eather 58L or 58R to terminal G9 on the fusebox, or the numberplate light circuit if you have an earlyer van.
That'll make it buzz only when a door is open (any door if all your intereour lights are linked on door modes like they are in Caravelles), the side lights are on and the ignition is off.
If you really want to be flash you could wire 58L and 58R to the left/right hand side/tail lights respectively - that'll also make it buzz if you leave the parking lights on the indicator stalk on - this is how VW used it in the cars it was fitted to.
As to why the 292 relay only works when a 99 relay is fitted? Strange, from the wireing diagram it shouldn't work at all! 99 relays must somehow mean the X wire has a route to ground when its turned off - weard, guess if it works its not doing the 99 relay any harm long term? Won't be much current.

Re: why it wasn't an option-
Not sure why VW didn't offer the 99 relay in the T3 as an
option, it was fitted to very high spec golfs of the era but most the cars these relays come from are later models which were better specced lower down the range. The basic design of those wiper relays must have been a pritty standard catalogue part in the automotive world as I'm told you can retrofit them to some Volvos with the same effect! (unless that was another thing Volvo borrowed off VW along with their diesel engines). The resion they wern't
standard is simple - most car optional extras are really cheep to make (especally if it replaces another component), its just extra profit on the options list to sell something higher spec. Cost to fit a Cruse control to a golf TDI is a good example as on the production line it must be no more than £30 over what it costs to build a car without it (probubly a lot less than that, you only need the switch), but on the options list its more like £300, because many people will pay that - for those that didn't they'll hapilly sell a simple retrofit kit later which anoyingly needs to be plugged in to their computer to turn it on so you can't quite do it at home (unless you have a VAGCOM cable).
