CV Joint Confusion - 2WD Manual

Post by Yozza »

Ay up,
I've stripped down the shafts and CV joints which were a bit battered (I've seen worse). I picked up the replacement parts today and fitted them onto the shaft, however, I noticed that the inner race is not as wide as it's predecessor and there was about 3mm of float along the spline. What the? The kit did come with a splined bevellle washer, so is this used to take up some of the float either behind or in front of the CV joint? So much for getting the motor back on the road tonight. :?
I thought the bevelle washers were only used on Syncros?
Any help appreciated as I'm keen to get my wheels back on the road.

Er.. my syncro doesnt have the washers.. no way would you ever get em on.. my 2wd on the other hand has them.. BUT.. I have used a set of 2wd shafts on my syncro too and I dont remember them having washers.. it could be that some shafts were made by a different manufactuer to a different spec so the CV kits have the washers in if needed.. if they are sloppy on the shafts then you MUst try and fit the washers (can be a bit of a laugh!!!! ) Syncro shafts tend to be a very tight fit that requires a press.. well most do...

As I suspect, different manufacturers of shafts... slightly different spec... I am sure Bricky or other will be along to let us know..
