Fuel pouring out
Well this is going to appear to be a stupid question but please read on:
I went to filling station this morning on tanked the fuel tank. (Not something I normally do but I was looking at amazement at how fast cost was going up compared to fuel and the next thing, fuel pornstart syndrome, fuel had spurted from filler neck.
We after i returned to the crewwy after donating 6 pints of blood and a kidney to pay for it I noticed fuel leaking from underside.
Quickly moved away from pump to discover fuel pouring from passenger front side of fuel tank. My main worry with the fuel tank arrangements of this vehicle is the filler neck just pushes through rubber seal to tank and I though the leak would of occured from here as the seal is not great in my mind. But the fuel was pouring from this area. Any ideas? When the tank was off I put all new pipes on the tank so it has vexed me a little. I could not inspect any further than looking at to remove tank or investigate further involves lifting the vehicle etc and I was in my work clobber.

Fuel lines and/or tank. Quite common.

Re: Fuel pouring out
I've just done one of these. Seams (corners mostly) can leak too. https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... fuel+lines" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Best to replasce tank if you're pulling it out mate.

Re: Fuel pouring out
This problem baffled me as the tank is in very good condition as it was fully checked during the retrofit of the cosworth fuel pump. All new pipes were installed.
I do not want to replace the tank as it has been modified and a new section welded in to accomodate the new pump and swirl pot (which was tested for leaks.
I am going to remove the fuel tank this weekend and see if I can see an obvious problem with the install, but I am not confident in finding the problem. I drained a couple of gallons out of the tank, the leak stopped and it has not leaked since so what ever the problem was it stemmed from the over fill. I am wondering if the leak came from where the filler neck goes into the tank as this appears to be a plastic pipe just pushed through the rubber grommet and there is no full seal to the joint.

Re: Fuel pouring out
but you said it was coming from the passenger side which would suggest split hoses/joints

Re: Fuel pouring out
Ok here's a stab in the dark as I've never had the tank off my bus so I don't know what the piping entails.
Could it be a breather pipe problem?
I.e breather incorrectly routed so that it's lower than the filler. This would explain fuel only leaking out when the tank is full if everything else is in good nick.
Just a suggestion.

Re: Fuel pouring out
Sounds like fuel filler seal. Bearing in mind its over 20 years old and not been disturbed before its probably gone a bit hard. Mine leaked in the same place, pipe slipped easily into old seal, new seal was an absolute mare to fit. Put the wheels on either lock and feel the top of tank just to make sure the 3 grommets on top haven't been pushed through into tank though and the 2 rearmost breathers are still connected. If your filler pipe can be twisted quite easily if you grab it theres your problem. You should really struggle to twist it when new seal is fitted.
It was suggested to me to use hairspray as a lubricant when fitting cos it helps to ease it in then goes sticky then kinda glues it in place (like when fitting new handlebar grips on yer bike). Didn't try that myself though.

Re: Fuel pouring out
i had a similar problem after brimming my tank... turned out to be the rubber grommet / seal on the filler breather line.
Like everyone says... plenty of seals on the tank. Most are an arrrse to get to i found.

Re: Fuel pouring out
Sorry.
The lack of info may have led to confusion.
Crewcab is a UK Right hooker.
When I had the cosworth pump mounted in fuel tank I went to the lengths of replacing each grommit and pipe and clip, each part is new on the tank assembly. The flow and return are linked up as the fuel is now delivered out of a top mounted cosworth drop in fuel pump. I should of stated that I suspected the fuel to be leaking from the filler joint and running across the tank width to passenger side with the comment I made earlier.
Like I said I am going to get the crewcab up on my ramp and drop the fuel tank to see if the problem is obvious.
If I remember correctly, both the filler neck and rubber brommit are new and it was a chuffing pain in the arris to get the things assembled insitu as I had also partly blocked the assess to the area with the new copper fuel lines I had installed along the chassis to the fuel filter situated infront of the tank behind the spare wheel.
I will hopefully find out what the problem is and reveal it on this thread if I find it, if now then I will just have to run the tank with less than 3/4 full.
Cheers for advice so far though

Just as a recap, here is the cosworth pump assembly installed in fuel tank, install is messy as I had to install a swirl pot inside the tank as well
