what does the notch look like

i'm currently trying to sort out changing over my hopefully fubarred distributor for a CU one.

however lining the marks up on the top of the distributor, leaves the vacuum unit on the new distributor under the airbox and subsequently not fitting.

Haynes says about lining up the notch on the pulley wheel to "0" which gives TDC on cylinder 1

however i'm having trouble locating the notch on the pulley

i've removed the fan grill and can make out the timing mark scale, but don't seem to be able to find the "notch"

is it on the front of the wheel, side or where and what does it look like. I can't feel it either as i'm a bit relutant to start moving the engine blindly


Help! the vans on the drive in bits....


oh, and the local RAC man, that helps on "the side", doesn't do old cars

Take the plugs out to make the engine easy to turn over. Remove rocker cover to expose valves for #1 cylinder. Turn engine over until the valves are rocking (inlet closing/exhaust opening), this indicates the approximate TDC (compression stroke) on #1. Look for the lug on the crankcase lining up with the aforementioned (love that word!) notch in the crank pulley. Insert distributor with rotor aligned to #1 HT lead. Fine tune when running with strobe - Simples!

i've done effectively that. After picking Fullsunians brain, owe you more than a couple of beers now bud!, lined up notch on pulley wheel with "0" ish, turned dizzy cap so it was no.1 cable over rotor and turned body so it all clamped together.

tweeked body as it didn't want to do over 20mph, and will book it into the garage to be "timed" up properly as i don't have a strobe light

so hopefully thats it

Might well be cheaper to buy a cheap strobe from ebay or borrow one though.

timing lights are easy to use you just pull the lead off spark plug in number one cylinder connect one lead of timing light to top of spark plug other lead to ht lead you pulled off cylinder one, start engine point timing light at pully and it will flash as the notch passes turn dizzy until line on pully is in line with notch sounds more complicated than it is, timing light just flashes as number one plug sparks
