
The starter bat cable in a VW is 70mm square.
To solder those ends I used a small £20 pen size gas flame torch. Very easy.

The problem you will have is that the cable is old, and not very flexible, and to solder a new end on will be difficult as the solder will not take on anything but totally clean wire. The cable does not have very much play in it for shortening.
Here is some new 60mm square cable at 8.81 a meter. You would need around 4m plus two terminals at around a pound each.

An auto electrician may be able to repair the end, but in my experience the cable will be too corroded to solder successfully on.
