Starter motor main positive wire size?

This is 25mm square wire I used for the internal electics in the syncro.


The starter bat cable in a VW is 70mm square.

To solder those ends I used a small £20 pen size gas flame torch. Very easy.

The problem you will have is that the cable is old, and not very flexible, and to solder a new end on will be difficult as the solder will not take on anything but totally clean wire. The cable does not have very much play in it for shortening.

Here is some new 60mm square cable at 8.81 a meter. You would need around 4m plus two terminals at around a pound each.

An auto electrician may be able to repair the end, but in my experience the cable will be too corroded to solder successfully on.

I wouldnt be scrabbling around on the floor under a van with axle stands - i'd undo the one bolt on the battery and take the damn lead out the van into the comfort of my own home.

At that point i would not mess around - as people have already stated, and i would go to my local auto electricians and get them to make up a new one.

But then i've got a diesel. And the battery is in the proper place - right next to the engine, so its an absolute doddle to take out the lead.....
