Worn brushes ? Battery to solenoid (heavy switch)....... to starter brushes ......to com....... to windings ....to earth. If the solenoid clicks it is probably ok and making the heavy switch but power is being lost through the brushes or com and giving an open circuit. When the solenoid is pulled in have you got 12v on both terminals of "heavy switch" to earth, I think you will have, if you have then brushes are your next thing to gander at. What do ya think ?

Well, things got worse and, in desperation, I bought a used starter motor (off a TD) and guess what:

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Success, 'twas the starter solenoid. At least all mating surfaces and connections are clean and protected!

Got solenoid off old one in local auto electricians to repair so I have a spare!

Thanks for all your replies. Now, about my oil leaks.....................
