Post by Essex Nige »

Shove a bit of paper or card inside and replace knob. Stopped mine from rattling.

i had this !

mine turned out to be worn bushes

the 2 plastic ones on the bottom of the stick

4 or five speed no difference, except ones in the stick , others in the linkage.

they wear so they rattle as the bolt that goes through is collard so it will only tighten a certain amout.

15 mins to change/swap them.

Mine stopped rattling but started again after I'd greased my linkage

more like these
Gear Stick Bush - J10891
but cant say with out a pic.
they go at the very bottom of the stick , where the bolt goes through to connect the linear shaft.

4/5 speed are the same ,they both have them , one has them in the stick , other has them in the rod.

the bolt has a shank which prevents you clamping the bushes, the bushes wear so have room to rattle.

part no 171 711 166
less than £1 each (should be) not sure if still available
its a mk1 golf part number and looks like they were fitted to lots of vehicles early 80's right up to 2003
it may not be the fault but its what i would try first.
