Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!
I went with Chickencoop to the other side of Ipswich last week as he wanted to buy a new camper. He bought it and happy with it, but guess what? Been rollered (and nice job too) and here he was talking to the two guys that started off this craze. Looks as though he flatted afterwards and frankly hes done a top job at that. Nice kind of 'chicken soup beige' colour.

Yes it was done outside. Just happened to have a day with no bugs about.
Do remember you have flatting down to do although we're doing another in a few weeks (a white one) and only plan on doing one layer of paint on that. A flat down with wet and dry 1200 and polish should do fine for that job.
Again, even the wet and dry came from £1 shops! If you're on a budget and want a finish that will stand up to the rigours of British weather, this is the way to go. Most frequent question I get asked is "Ah but whats it like close up?" - answer there is its as good as the flatting back and polishing.
Between stages its slightly orange peely but flats back lovely. Don't have paint to thick and its ok even as it is.

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!
I did the first coat on the upper half of my van at the weekend. Took about 30 minutes to mix the paint, and then about an hour and a half to do the rollering. It went on well and is smooth, although it is a thin layer and the grey primer still shows through the white. No problem though, will persevere. The finish is smooth enough that I'm anticipating a fuss-free flat back ready for the next layer.
Going to do all the top half (down to and including the big gully) to completion before starting the lower half in Grey.

Now you've got a feel for the mix, you'll be fine I'm sure. Too thick or too thin presents its own problems but get it right and you're away.
Theraputic don't you think?

Theraputic in a hectic way? Yea.
I did the second coat yesterday and I think I may have been a little over confident with the thickness of paint. I got the mix almost exactly the same but because the weather was warm I rushed to get it on and slaped it on a bit thick! No harm, will just take a bit longer to flat next time. Looking good and nearly have total coverage now though.

Can it be removed first with wet and dry to avoid need for a silly thin scrim of filler...
Go right down to rust with wet and dry or plain old sandpaper. I have NO faith in cellulose primer to treat previously rusty areas. In my experience it just doesn't work. However you can treat with vactan until prep time as any removed during sanding will be sorted by the rustoleum paint.
I keep emphasising this, but the finish is as good as the work put in on flatting back. You'll get areas that have an almost perfect finish and others that are less so. Keeping the area to be painted, flat at all times is the key since you'll be building layers of paint with this roller technique (much as you do by spraying) and even sprayers have to flat back to keep the surface smooth. The final coat (from my point of view) will be a more thinned paint to provide the final gloss, and if needed, a light flat with 1200 wet and dry and a final polish. A few ideas for final polishing on volkszone are mentioned. I've not covered it since I've not finished the final coat.
i can vouch for that, the guy i bought my van from didn't rub it back at all, it shows
Anyone who says the finish is poor is NOT doing the flatting/prep work properly.
Up to now I'm using this hot sun to bake the layers I've done on the outside whilst I concentrate on interior places that need painting. By next week I'll be flatting outside again for layer 3 and since the temperature has risen significantly since I started, I'll be adding more thinners too.
pity those who don't drink, when they wake in the morning, thats the best they will feel all day!

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!
I've been reading a lot of comments about mixing the paint with white spirit and how people need to "fold" the paint in with the spirit and wait until it's properly mixed together. I'm also reading a lot of comments about managing bubbles in the paint when it's applied. Could either of these be due to the fact that it's white spirit? I'm just wondering if the proper rustoleum thinners would alleviate these problems...?

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!
Can't see it making much difference really. Besides, if you let things stand for a short while, the bubbles vanish.

I've bought the thinners so I'll post my findings about mixing & bubbles.
