Hi

Anyone know where I can get either a couple of relays or a duel relay so I can replce my current one. I need to wire up the fridge and the leasure battery. Actually anyone know of a good tutorial on this subject. ? Oh and how much would I be looking at for a relay?

Any Motor accesory shop (even Halfords) will sell you a relay. Best off with at least 40A switching.

I just used standard 30 amp auto relays, I have two plumbed in.
One is the split relay for the charging and the other switches power to the cool box when the engine is running.
I just pigged back one on top of the over (electrically).

I have been looking at these and it looks really easy to wire up, however Im not sure how to wire this up with the fridge as well, so the fridge works when the engine is running

Basically you just replicate your split charging system .

The wire that is connected to 86 on your split relay needs to be extended to 86 on the second relay.
Run a fused feed from the Leisure Battery (LB) to 30 on the second relay.
Run a feed from 87 on the second relay to your fridge.
Run an earth lead from 85 on the second relay to earth (naturally).

The driver for the relay is the voltage that appears (from alternator) on 86 of the split relay, this throws the relay contacts over allowing the charging current to flow from the Starter Battery (SB) to the LB.

This same driver can be used on a second relay, when the voltage appears on 86 of the second relay this will throw the relay contacts over allowing current to flow from LB to fridge.

This is how mine is wired (and has been for some years) and runs without problems.

Ah thats the problem I have got. I belive that my current system also allows current to flow from the LB to the fridge whilst the engine is running. But it still flatens then battery, so I dont think there is enough current from the alternator. It wa smy understanding that the alternator should supply current to the fridge whilst the engine is running and not from the LB

I think I need to rip the old system out and start again

I wired mine up so that the fridge is never wired to the SB only the LB.
I find that there is enough umph from the standard (65) alternator to charge the batteries and keep the fridge cool when driving.
At tickover or dribbling through town or jams I do not think the alternator will produce enough.

You could unplug or switch off the fridge in case, but I have never experience any problems with this set up.
