Bottom rear seam. How to get behind it?

Post by 1664 »

I've managed to get behind all my seams to treat them except for this bit circled in yellow
Image

Is where the seams join in the engine bay? It's just that there's loads of plasticky stuff in the way and I don't want to rip it all out if I can't get at the back of the seam that way. I've had a quick look under the arch but can't see owt as it's got that VW 'Zeebarting' (sp?) rust proofing over it.....

The underbody sealant is a pig to remove in corners, I use a wire brush attached to an angle grinder but even then you have to dig the remnants from the corners (I wear a safety visor as it flies everywhere). Filthy job but I don't know of another method to remove it. Haven't had to remove it on those seams yet but even so I brush loads of grease into the corners every Autumn and Spring and behind any seams that I can get to. Touch wood, so far so good!

I have no intention of removing the zeebarting if I can gain access to the actual seam joint in the engine bay. Apart from the small bit of seam rust the van's fine.

All the seam joints have been internal so far, so I'm hoping it's in the engine bay itself (if you can count that as 'internal'.) I'd just like to confirm that before I pull all the plastic out and find out its not there.......

Yeah, you access the back of these seams from the wheel arch - just been doing this job meself --

I used a hot-air gun and old chisel to get most of the underseal off, then sprayed it with white spirit and took a wire brush on a power drill to get the rest off - cleans up nicely (good overalls and eye protection needed!)

Oh damn  . I was really hoping it'd be in the engine bay. From outside the rust looks almost insignificant; but then it always does. I'll remove the seam filler etc and have a good look before I rip the Zeebarting off though.

Thanks for your input everyone :ok

i think if you remove the rear lights...4 screws on each..you might be able to see the rear seam....but not 100 % sure...4 screws its worth a look innit

1664,
Hmmm, my seams resemble yours. Methinks I'm going to have to deal with them fairly soon and I would be very interested in how you are tackling the problem (not only your thread topic).

Naturally, beers will be afforded to you when we meet.

Thanks mate.

Hi Eric. I've mostly been taking photos of the furniture removal rather than the seam rust but I took a few. The 'before' photos are on this thread, Click here>>>> https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 3#p7358953" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and briefly describes how I was going about tackling it. There is no guarantee that how I'm going about it will work in the long run however but obviously I hope it will. Can't be worse than not doing anything whatever happens.

Here's a couple of 'after' photos. All I have to do to the inside now is waxoyl it and cover the seams in 'Shultz' sealant. I'm blocking off that lower vent too.

I'm at the primer stage outside - it needs levelling etc before I spray the top coat and seal the seams followed by more paint. I'm not exactly bothered about matching the new paint to the old at the moment as I'm strongly being drawn in the direction of a respray - the van has small areas of rust starting in several places so I'm going to do the lot anyway......

I'll take some more pictures tomorrow of the bits that haven't reached the primer stage yet...... :ok
