Changing the sump
I believe i have a crack in my oil sump as there is a bit of gum on the farside of the sump from the back. it appears to be filling in a crack and the oil is seaping from around it as if it has broken its seal. I would like to make sure it is a crack before i fork out god knows how much for a new sump. If i take the sump off can i leave it off for how ever long it takes for a new one or does it need to be covered up and sealed at all times?
Cheers

Dunno how much a new sump is but you can proberly find a second hand one quite easily i would have thought, dunno what engine you have though.
Alternativly can you get the old one welded up? is it steel or alloy? if its steel most garages have a Mig welder for mild steel, you can weld aluminium with Mig but need a slightly differnent set-up so most garages won't have that, you'll have to find a fabrication shop who use Aluminium Mig or better Tig
As for taking the sump off, I would certainly cover up the bottom part of the exposed engine, you dont really want bits of crap getting into crank and oil pickup.

Had the sump off today to see if i can see why it was leaking. Underneath the gum someone had put there was a crack about an 1" long. not very wide but enough to let oil seep through. Rang a local garage i used to work for and he reckons he can get it welded by someone so thats good news! it is reely good to see ur engine from underneath (without the sump on). check the crank and how clean ur engine is!
Gonna replace a bracket on the exhaust which has been rattling like mad for a while and obivously an oil change while im doin the sump so should be a healthy beast when im done!!
Anyone want to see pics???

The sump might be cracked because it was bolted up incorrectly... put the through bolts from the gearbox in and nip them up gently to align it all before you tighten all the socket cap heads. Use a torque wrench and work you way around steadily

Use photoshop, or ACDSee or Dreamweaver to knock those back to 640x 480 - Stephen Lone Ranger, jake or Mocki will have a fit at that size.. plus I can't see what I'm looking at... cam cover's can of course leak, if that's what you are saying, but shouldn't if they haven't been distorted... think TC said once they had a habit - is this JX or AAZ cam cover retaning system (multi-screw at edges or 2 through the lid?)

Nope, a while back Thomas put soemthing in a thread about these sortof leaks, no idea where but should eb able to find with search...
Pretty sure he though it would keep happening till the cam cover was changed as they get distorted - so try a different one - in fact I've got one, then make sure you torque down even;t to quoted figure, or be gentle with it - common problem for about a century now. rocker box cover leaks..
PM me your address if you want it..
