Van not starting

Post by colouredFunk »

Hey, I went to start my Van today but nothing was happening, not turning over... :( just a clickin noise coming from the ignition. I tested the battery and it is reading in at 11.66Volts.. Do you think it could be the battery or the starter motor or something completely different?

sounds like your battery.get a jump start and check the output of your alternator with a voltmeter.

yep was my battery... I put it in my car to charge for bit.....put it back in the van and... sorted! :D

Think the route of my problem is the starter motor, but I've talked about this in another post...

sounds to me like your battery either not holding its charge or not being charged have you checked the levels in each cell if the plates are showing it won't charge properly or hold a charge for long

with the engine running put a voltmeter across the battery terminals.you should get a reading of 14.something volts.if not it could well be the alternator..

I run a fleet of truck's (well only two at the moment so a very small fleet) and my T25, whenever one won't start on the electrickery side I allways go to my local automotive battery shop (not Halfwits) and say the vehicle wouldn't start can you please check the starting and charging system and the battery. This takes about 10 mins, This way you get to the cause of any problems without buying any pointless componants. Unfortunatly these places seem to be getting as hard to find as rocking horse poo, but if you find a good one it might be worth a post
I am in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire I use Groves Batteries. I use to use Warickshire Ignition Services who also were excelent but they are unfortunatly no longer with us :(
It's nothing a great deal of time and money can't fix

Its a fact that most automotive electricians are now slowly closing down - like a lot of traditional or specialist trades

In my humble opinion I would say it was your battery connections,I would have thought it would have at least tried to turn over at the voltage you stated,or as in my case the starter solenoid.

11.66V too low for starting I would suggest - that's pretty well discharged isn't it.

Is this not the winter and recent wet weather taking its toll - agree that first terminals cleaned and a good coat of NoCrode or vaseline before refitting tightly - to see if that fixes it.
