any tips on how to get the bu**er on...oh yeh its a 1.6td

just slacken the alternator remove old belt fit new one and tighten back up

wish it were that easy its got two belts the alternator belt(easy to replace) and the waterpump belt..not so easy

my old Jx only had one, you may have a split pulley if you have 2 belts. you need to remove the bolts and split the pullley on the pump there should be spacers to give you the correct tension i.e the more between the 2 halves the slacker it will be and vice versa. My old 86 passat td had a similar setup, hope this helps.

Tis important to get the right size belts , especially the width or they will never tighten.
my 86 TD was specified as 9.5X643LA as the coolant belt and 9.5 x 600 as the alternator.
This should be stamped on the outside.
if you over tighten , it will bust the water pump bearings.
very fiddly and easier if you take off the top up tank.

thanks for that td.when you say.should be stamped on the outside.do you mean on the pulley wheel..

No, this was on the belt in white lettering. It is hard to get the correct belts for this engine I have found . Probaly main dealer is best with ordering the belts specified in the manual.

sorted it has the very same belts as your old engine.it took two of us to get the bu**er on.but we got there...
