Re: VegOil..
Are there any signs of the top injector pump seal or the throttle lever arm bush/seal leaking...
REgardless it is possible that air might be getting in*, have you checked the tightening of the screws holding the main body down
I think AndyS might say there is a 'very big chance of this!', however, check that fuel filter, the attachment of the return line to the filter top, etc.
Prob best to just change it regardless, to eliminate that!

Had enough, spent a few hours out on the van (and dodging rain and hailstones) checking electrical connections on the GP relay and then ran a wire upto the dahs off the GP buzzbar to a light on the dahs to indicate when the GPs are warming up.
The GPs stay on for about 40secs - fired the van up, nothing but a splutter.
Put a new fuel filter on - incidently, when I undid the drain screw on the old one (whilst still in place) there was a woosh of air and some gurgling). Put the new one on, primed it with a few turn overs and opened an injector pipe, used the priming bulb on the fuel line.
Fire it up - fired up nicely - let it run for about 10 minutes, checked the clear fuel line - no bubbles, gave it some revs, seemed OK, a bit loud a clackety but OK.
Thought about taking it for a test run, put foot on clutch - feck all there, tried putting it inot reverse, BANG, stalled the stoopid bllomin van
Looked at brake fluid resorvoir, a bit low - bit dark to exactly how low, topped it up. Pumped brake and clutch. Clutch is ighter than a supermodels dinner plate.
Tried tunring engine over to see if the hydraulics/ vacumn system just needed the engine running becasue it has been sitting for nearly most of the last 3 feckin weeks
Just turns and attempts to start but not even a splutter.
Anybody want a scrap van????????

prime it and it would go, leave it 5 mins, and try again, splutter splutter naff all........
needs a DJ dropping in i recon

Make sure that fuel filter return line fitting on the top of the filter is very secure, if its running and you wiggle it about you might see bubbles come up the fuel feed line... a sure sign.
Otherwise Mocki's prob right, its the pump due Vegoil rotting the seals.
What pump do you need Louey, I asked before, is it a TD? I've got one you can have.. owe you for shed storage anyway

Thanks Clive, but I@m not prepared to spend anymore time and money on it - I have a spare pump, its a non turbo BTW.

To my way of thinking this sounds like a vacuum in the fuel line. Fuel is draining back until the line is clear, upon starting suction is blocking line in tank again after a little running.Partial blockage is allowing idle but not enough for revs.

Partial blockage - You could be right there, a whoosh and some gurgling is not normal, a weep of water and then some fuel trickling down, but a whoosh...
Blow back down the fuel feed line from the filter back to tank?

I may try to get it running so I can sell it easily instead of a non runner.
How do I go about solving this?? new fuel lines? Drain fuel tank? New pump??

Reading back it seems that you may have been running svo or wvo - you haven't got a build up of sludge in your fuel tank have you? Someone with more knowledge of the pitfalls may be able to help on this - I've heard of "jellyfying" when the tank has a frog spawn type substance build up.(I run with about 20% wvo but have not been using it long enough yet to have encountered any problems) Only cure for that is dropping the tank and cleaning it out apparently.

well its running, restarting and changes gear and stops OK
THANKS MARCUS and lovely to see you as well Tracy
Turns out the timing was out quite a bit - not been tuned properly since I fitted the engine 3 yeas ago. It caused poor starting. The clutch system was bled too. Marcus also tidies up a 'few' looses cables and pointed out a few other potential hazards

It also shows that however useful the Tech Advice forum is, advice has to be based on a whole lot of assumptions and in many circumstances can never be a substitute for a hands-on professional mechanic in attendance.
