But it may not have been an idiot.....it may have been a learner who made a genuine mistook!!

No Emm, that is unforgiveable, even kiddies are taught with building bricks and slots and holes and lining things up... at age 3 :)

All power to you Asa, should at least pull a lot smoother, as these engines really can do...

Should, but isn't. Picked up the new gaskets today, made sure the mating faces were really clean, fitted, tested, well I managed to adjust things enough to stop it stalling, but it's well down on power and struggles uphill. Idling is lumpy, and spraying carb cleaner round the same area increases the revs again. :(

Dismantled again, refitted gaskets with HT silicon this time, still no improvement. :(
Does anyone know the correct torque for the inlet manifold bolts? HBOL is useless, but as the heads are alloy I'm being careful and have kept it down to 18 lb/ft as per the plugs - is that right? :?:

I'm going to do it all again tomorrow, but I'm coming to think that it's never going to be right with that DF manifold, and I'm going to have to source a proper DG manifold & carb.

18 is quite enough if they're M8

You cleaned the faces, have you actually trued the faces though?

Cleaning~trueing mating faces (Wiki techniques)

Something is wrong here...

Are you sure the manifold itself isn't perforated?

I was only trying to be nice :D Done some pretty dim things in my time...

Anyways.....I *might* have a DG manifold in the garage. I should have - we had a spare. I deffo have a 2.1DJ as it has the injectors (which are brand new) on it.

Are either of these any good to you? We are going to bonfire do....think they may be a bit heavy to post...

I know

But think you'd try it both ways around though, unless it was in fact the wrong gasket for that manifold, or the head ports and that manifold don't match well anyway.

DG manifold would be nice, but you're a long way from me - my daughter is 100 miles closer in Bedford, but even that's far enough.

Oh dear, I think I've now found the real problem... don't know why I didn't see this before (wrong specs maybe?), but...

Looks like a cracked head :(

I'm off now to see if I can sell some children to fund this

Not clear enough to see without close focus photo...

Is that really a crack running up the inisde of the port and running across face between the ports? Looks like a casting flash from here :)

But you're on the spot, if it is cracked across that face it maybe will open up when it gets hot...

hang on... try this one. Look at the circled area.

[img:321:322]http://www.b0lus.com/images/cars/vw/IMAG0547a.jpg[/img]

It doesn't look healthy, and I can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't seal, given new gaskets and a bead of silicon as well.

Looks like £225+vat is about the going rate, unless anyone has any better suggestions?

I can't see another photo, let alone the circled area :)

Is that per child?

Oops! edited above...

£225 + vat per head... I would expect far more for the children, they cost me enough dammit!

Try degreasing it well and then slurring some of that High Temp Silicone into it... (Is that the 220C stuff) ?

You never know, worth a crack? Oops! scuse the pun :D

...and might prove the point one way or the other ?

I've tried. Shedloads of silicon, more than I'd normally use. But I drove the bus the 20 miles to Nottingham & back today (needed the capacity with two kids at hockey goalie school), and while it managed, it was hard work - struggling to pull uphill, misfiring, and took all my driving skills to keep it from stalling at junctions - it's fun dabbing the accelerator with your heel while braking (not).

No, this one's going to put a hole in my wallet; I'll be selling a guitar, that's how desperate it is!

I meant into the crack itself, if that's what's circled inside the port.

Can be ground out and ally welded, doesn't look in a critical position

Anyway, good luck with it....
