non starting 1.9 diesel - less jip more go

bloo dy thing won't start. After changing the waterpump the friggin van won't start - I took the battery out and gave it a good 20 hours charging. Put it back in the van and it turned and friggin turned, but would not start - was very close a couple of times - slight splutter.

Confused and peeved off.

any ideas??

you haven't knocked the wire off the pump , plugs getting hot ?

plugs could be an issue - been meaning to wire them up to a relay instead of previous owners push button on the dash THAT doesn't seem to have a relay wired up on it.

BUT - surely the van would kick in after a good lot of turning over??

if its a 1Y or AZZ then no it wont start without glow plugs, these engines are indirect injection, they need glow plugs!!!!

As Other-Power says you need working glow plugs, when they get old they glow half way up instead of the tip and are less efficient then, also using a push button switch with the length of run of the wiring will give a voltage drop also if the wiring isnt man enough all this will mean that the glowplugs have more of a glowworm. :run

is you battery in the engine bay?
just run a nice thick (jumplead size) cable from the + on the battery to the buz bar with everything switched off, then after 45 secs disconnect it and turn it over

if its not in the engine bay, try the jumper pack, but be very carefull not to short anything out.....

louey a safe and harmless way of trying it is to buy a can of bradex easy start and get someone to squirt it into the air filter inlet while you turn it over. it will start the engine and prove that you just need a starting aid that works.
tek no notice of any bolloxx that anyone tells you about easy start,, it is designed to make engines start and does not harm them,,, neither do the engines become addicted to it, they're inanimate objects (it's just that they're so foooked wen folks use it that they won't start without it anyhow)
many american diesels use ether as a starting aid from the factory as it's much more efficient than high ampage glowplugs.
try it,,,, you'll like it

Have you got a hot air gun/paint stripper thing... just run that on low (Setting 1) for a few minutes into the inlet tract or all around where filter picks air up from..

that'll also make it start.

Considering the amount of amperage involved in getting all four glow plugs up to temp it sounds to me that you are driving a potential death trap. Having wiring going to a push button on the dash like this is the worst kind of back street wiring bodge and my recommendation would be to stop using it until it is properly and safely sorted.

OTOH, electrical fires in the relay box of JX diesels due to the glow plug wiring there is also not uncommon!

It's a terrible cramped junction box design, mine had had a fire there before I bought it...

Make sure the wires in there are well separated and that the fusible link is in place, not shorted with heavy wire, and that nothing can touch the lnk

But I agree running 55 Amps up to a switch at the front is not a good idea, if it can be avoided... that's what relays are for.
