5 sets of wires on me diesel pump.. what are they ??

You have an Ecomatic diesel. This has all sorts of tricksy electrics/electronics that shut off the engine when you come to a junction *shudders*.
That will probably be why your engine isn't running - there must be a fair old number of sensors doing nonsensical, unnatural stuff to the engine.
Unless you can find which of these sensors you need to connect up to keep the solenoid open then you're going to have the devil's own job getting it running.
Find another non-Econonsense injector pump and fit it.

This is taking for granted its a 1.9D and it's not a 1Y
I hope you got your glow control unit with your engine!
On your pump you have a
1.Full load regualtion solenoid
2.Fuel volume potentiometer
3.Fuel injection timing solenoid
4.Fuel cut off control module
5.Stop solenoid.
For it all to work as it should you'll need the clocks, key, all the sensors including VSS etc..
For the work involved you may aswell stick a TDI in there and have some proper performance!
Is this a SDI engine? SDI is basically a TDI without a turbo so using a pump from a IDI engine like a 1Y wont work.
You need to check the engine code and make sure what it is before we can say for sure.

i've had alook in my autodata injection books.
i dont have book 3 which covers the 1y in a golf but book 4 covers 1y in
seat.
it shows a pump very similar to yours.it is not a standard mechanical pump.
some pump control functions are electronic.
the glow plug control module controls these functions(glow relay seperate component) and is found near fusebox
there is an rpm (crank)sensor near vac pump
there is an immobiliser ecu
question is,did you remove the engine yourself?
was it a transponder key?
more importantly,is the car still available to remove parts needed?

ANYONE WANNA BUY A 82 WESTY 1.9 DIESEL WITH A LOW MILES MOTOR IN IT (joking). still aint running havent had the time or second pair of helping hands, so it really is impossible. although i managed to swap the engine on my own, i cant turn the engine and be round the back at the same time, i m going to connect each of the 10 wires live(individually) see what happens, if it still doesnt work????????????????????????
I'm the one who posted a simular message, the engine and pump are from a golf ecomatic 1.9 N/A 1Y circa 1995
I have still not got around to finishing the van or even touching the engine as yet.
my pump is marked with the manufactures number: 0 460 484 071 and the VW number 028 130 027
weaselchin, you dont seem to have bypassed the immobiliser yet, drill out the two rivets on the blackbox on the back of the pump, connect the solenoid underneath in parallel with the stop solenoid, this will eliminate 3 cables to start with and possibly get fuel through atleast.
this is only a guess, maybe simon or DH can confirm otherwise, but the cables from inbetween the four injector pipes seem to be conncted to some sort of switch or pressure transducer so you can proberly leave it disconected, this is usually blanked off with a plug you remove to set up the timing where you measure where the distributor plunger is in relation to TDC
either way, bypass the imobiliser first
keep us posted
