Water pump with a leak?

Whilst driving water is leaking from the water pump area, however Brian is not a 100% sure it is the pump/O ring that's leaking, is there anyway of confirming that the pump is faulty without taking it off?

Additional info - no rise in temp and water is lost with engine on and off.
1987 1.9 Petrol engine RHD Auto sleeper

Have checked wiki but couldn't find owt.

Is it the bearing this is the most likely? does your heater work? If it stops working don't run it.

The water pump sometimes starts to leak from around the spindle that goes to the pulley wheel. It might be worth removing the timing belt and checking to see if there's any side-to-side play on the water pump pulley / spindle. If you do try this, be careful not to over-tension the belt when you put it on again because if the pump is on its way out, too much tension can accelerate the pump failure.

Are you still up in the North East? I've had some experience of leaking / dead water pump syndrome.

Hiya Tony...thankfully we are back home now. There is alot of brown "pooh" water at the base of the pump which to Brian seems to be a faulty O ring....your thoughts please.

Ohhhh i feel right grown up cos im posting summit sensible...

must start posting my usual drivel in general

The bearing is probably on it's way out we had to be recovered on our way home from bustypes because of this. As Tony said is what we have had. Get a new pump ASAP if it is and it is an easy job to do. Bleeding the system can take a while though.

Thanks Peppychilli. Have looked on JK for the said pump but Brian seems to think it looks slightly different to the one in Haynes Manual. Noticed in the manual there is 2 types pre 85 and post 85....we have a recon engine history unk, if Brian looks at the engine what does he need to look for to find out what type it is so we can buy the right pump.

Engine code at the bottom of the oil breather housing. Also have a look to see which thermostat housing you have; metal one on the side of the water pump, or black plastic one at the back left of engine bay (as you look into it from the back bumper).

Thanks for locating the post Tony, appreciate the kind gesture. A job for the weekend. Van did very well travelling to Berwick and back apart from the leak which we noticed at Brum.
