Water pump?

Post by unhappy camper »

Hi,sorry if this has already been asked. I can't find it on Wiki. I've a 1985 watercooled 1915cc DG engined Caravelle. Is there any difficulties when changing the water pump :?: I am going to tackle it this week, weather permitting, before our next trip away. Any information or guidance will much appreciated :D

Hi
my recollection is that there were two types of pump housing used and depends on your model (I believe '85 saw a few changes). However if it is like mine (Dec '85) DG engine:-

[IMG:800:600]http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l261/ ... MG2256.jpg[/img]

it will have two main body parts to it. 1) the actual pump housing, held on by three bolts/studs which attach behind the pully wheel and 2)a side housing which connects the various water pipes. 2 needs to be at the very least loosened (couple of long bolts hold it to 1 - take care, these are usually cruddy and stiff!)

Do not forget the O ring that goes here, you will need a new one (may be with the new water pump kit?):-

Main tip is, be REALLY careful removing any bolts/studs from these engines, they are prone to be seized. If you do succeed, clean up and Copperslip everything before reassembly!

Good luck, hope this helps......?

Good photos Fairwynds! As fw said, that's an early DG engine and the housing that is bolted on the side of the water pump is the thermostat housing which you need to be really careful with when removing because they're difficult to get hold of now, even second hand ones. I'd recommend spraying the joint between t'sat housing and the water pump with copious amounts of Plusgas over a few days before you do the job, in the hope that this might help those long bolts to come loose, without shearing the heads off them. Have a look at the info in the wiki about removing rusty bolts etc and go gently with them!

Once you've got the t'stat housing off, it might be worth replacing the thermostat whilst you're at it, unless you know its been done recently. Check the condition of the rubber hoses which attach to t'stat housing, and the metal pipes (which are prone to rusting and a bit pricey so you might want to paint them with some hammerite, like in fw's photos, to preserve them).

Make sure you get the right replacement water pump as there are different ones and if you get the wrong one you could end up with an extra outlet to blank off.

Read the wiki for info about bleeding the cooling system when you're filling it again.

Use the search facility and search for previous posts on this subject, there's been a few.

Good luck with it.

Tony

The 'O' ring doesn't come with the water pump but readily available from a dealer.

Hi thanks for all your help earlier. I've decided to make a start on replacing the water pump. I've loosened the hoses and managed to get one thermostat bolt undone, unfortunately the bolt nearest the back of the vehicle has snapped. Will this stop the thermostat coming off? Does it slide off to the left as you are looking down? or does it lift off? I need to get the water pump pulley off. Anyone got any ideas how to do this? i.e lock the pulley. If I get the bottom pulley off, can I remove the waterpump with the thermostat still attached? There is only two bolts holding the thermostat on isn't there? I have only loosened two & it won't budge. I don't want to force it & do some damage. Sorry for all the questions. Any help would be much appreciated,Don

Don,
dont worry about the snapped bolt, it happens! You are going to replace the water pump anyhow (so you will have a new bit to bolt into!)
There is a gasket between the thermo housing and the water pump, which is (often) stuck fast with some form of sealant too, so you may need to use a WOODEN (!) drift and a hammer. DO NOT hit alloy casing with hammer! Nice lump of wood and give it a whack, works a treat. You may also have to prise the two bits apart, but again be VERY careful, as you dont want to damage the mating faces.
The pulley is held on with three bolts. Remove these and the pulley is in two halves (imagine two saucers back to back) They are an 'interferance fit' which is a technical way of saying bloody tight! Again, coaxing with wooden drift usually works.
The actiual water pump may well be held on with 3 x nuts onto studs, or 3 x bolts or a combination. Once they are removed, bosh the pump off with your trusty piece of wood and hey presto!
Really important to thoroughly clean up all mating faces, including inside the bit bore that fits over the black metal pipe (with O ring) in pic. Fine emery paper is good. Also, run a suitable drill through the holes where the stuck bolts went thro the themo housing, and copperslip new bolts for future!
Oh, water pump should come free with housing but it may be easier to dismatle in situ as above, coz of the possibilty of everything being seized...
Good luck EW

Here's a photo of the relevant bits when it's all off the van:

Image

You can remove the t'stat housing and water pump as one, but as you can see from the photo you're gonna need to disconnect that bottom metal pipe from the pump before the pump will go anywhere. The pump eventually comes off by pulling it towards you, not by going to the left.

iirc, to get that bottom pipe off you'll have to remove the crankshaft pulley to gain access to the bolts that fix the pipe to the pump (well we did when we did ours anyway).

To remove the water pump pulley wheel, remove the belt, find a piece of wood just the right thickness to get under the bottom of the wheel and wedge it so it can't move, then undo the bolts that hold the wheel on.

OR leave the belt on and lean on it while a 'charming assistant' [img:200:271]http://www.wayoftherodent.com/wilbur/McGee-Debbie.jpg[/img] undoes the 3 bolts  .
