brake caliper seal perished, is it a DIY job to replace?

Big lumps of metals and spanners.

brake caliper seal perished, is it a DIY job to replace?

Post by Willoughby »

Just replaced my front brake pads and noticed one of the seals has perished.
Is replacing the seal a job that can be done without to much hastle? The caliper is in good condition and both sides move ok.

If it's a nightmare any idea on how much it should cost to get replaced?

Its the dust cover, yes its possible to replace this part, but it also depends on how much crud and corrosion is around..

Hi toomanytoys

Looks in good condition, The seal is still there it's just split. I gave it a quick squirt with WD40 and made sure it traveled all the way in and out.

Dust cover on the outside, seal is in the caliper.. Mmm, WD, not sure that WD is that compatable with brake seals.

If you clean it out with brake cleaner when refitting the dust seals, then should be ok...

is it known where/who does the seal kits? I have tried GSF just today and they are ordering some in but I'm not convinced they are the correct ones!

They told me the kit fits either - and they were right, as I did a refurb on examples of both types.

ahhhh thats good to know

Do you know if the mounting hole centres are the same on the two calipers or would you need to replace the stub axle/hub etc etc

Same holes - they seem to be interchangeable.
I have a spare good Girling one (n/s) if anyone needs one.
