Snapped gear stick!

Post by burnso »

Folks,

I have a 1.9 DG with a snapped gear stick (halfway up the shaft)! Am I correct in thinking all gearsticks are the same? If so, any ideas where I should go for a second hand one?

Cheers

Mark

I snapped mine a while back so i sleaved it (put a metal bar inside it) and welded it all back together works fine !!!!

I thought that too, but the garage said the metal was too poor quality to weld. At £71 for a new un, I'd rather go the second hand route!

Cheers

I'm gonna give it a go. If all else fails, I can get a second hand one.

Thanks for the advice

i snapped mine in april, right at the bottom where the spring retainer grub screw goes, we did just the same, inserted a bolt up the middle, welded one end, cut the head off, welded the other end, ground it down to look nicer, refitted and its been like it since........ 6000 miles +

if they cant weld it, they aint welders!

anyhow, early and late sticks are different, one has the fork on the stick, the other is the oposite......

At first I thought you must be a band of boy racers busting your gear sticks twenty to the dozen! But on reflection mine is a bit like stirring a bucket of bricks with a crowbar. Maybe that is why my selector gismo broke inside the box... Anyway not wishing to miss an oportunity what about engineering a lockable joint for additional vehicle security.
cheers

Easy enough job to repair as others have said, your garage is populated by "fitters" as opposed to mechanics. stick your location on your profile and no doubt one of us is near enough to oblige

My local garage welded mine - snapped off low like Mocki's - first off it snapped again straight away, but their 2nd attempt has lasted nearly 2 years now :D
