1981 Westy Hook Up Replacement?

Post by mojo175 »

Hi everyone.

Got myself an 81 westy and it has the german (obviously) 2 pin hook up on the outside, my question is what is the best way to convert this for use in the UK?

Is it easier to get hold of the matching female socket and then make up a couple of leads that can be plugged in at camp sites or at home and if so where can you get the sockets from?

Alternatively is it possible to get a replacement uk male plug that fits directly into the same size hole in the van as the 2 pin original one (don't want to have to start cutting the van)

All opinions and ideas welcome

Cheers

What size is the square hole? Rainbow Conversions have various UK type hook-up sockets, one of which may be suitable.
Keep it real.

1981 Westy Hook Up Replacement?

Hi, is it a blue plug with 3 pins? if so this is what is known as a 16a cee form connector, this is generally excepted as waterproof as well. you can buy a cable from most camping shops, and 13a to 16a converter as well, this will allow you to plug in a home. For use in Europe you will also need a Shuco to 16a socket.

Hi

If it was my van I would purchase a UK hookup lead and replace the socket to match the van. Have you got a photo you could post?
I may have a spare.

Grahem, the early Jokers had a different plug to what you are describing, they have a 2 pin set-up, see his original post. They had a special lead with the corresponding fitting that plugged into it. When he`s got back about it, we`ll see which way he`s gone, but the easiest way is to replace the 2 pin affair with the blue plug type, that the later ones come with. Not a big job to do.
Keep it real.

Hi Guys

Cheers for the replies. I've attached a photo for you to see.

I'm thinking the best and safest way would be to replace this plug with a 3 pin uk type plug, anyone know any websites that sell what I need?

Cheers

Hi Guys. I think we have a cable at work that would plug into that. Got put into one of our cable trunks by mistake, when I was doing a gig in Germany, if you want I will have a dig round. Should I find it do you want it?

scroll down the electrical page and you`ll come to the electric hook-up boxes. there are some square ones, as well as the later type oblong ones that have the blue plug in them.

Hi

A standard inline "CEE 7/7" Socket will do the trick.

It has earthing clips on both sides to connect with the CEE 7/4 socket and a female contact to accept the earthing pin of the type E socket.

The CEE 7/7 is compatible with both Schuko and French standard sockets.
