1Y or not 1Y? source of oil leak?

Post by msilvey »

Hi All,

After a long and patient search we have just bought our first T25 it's intended for our honeymoon later in the year and then for life :) . So far we think it's the bee's knees well chuffed. It's a 1987 Club Joker; left hooker; the interior is all original (apart from the recovered front seats) and in good nick and it's had a reasonable respray (thought the respray was great when we bought it but after having it for a few days noticed that it wasn't as good as they said on the advert but hey the chassis is brill and there's not a lot of 'rust pudding' elsewhere.

Been driving it for a couple of days and loving it. Apparently it has a 1.9 N/A engine, no idea of the engine mileage and particulars as the paperwork for this bit is amiss. Having driven it and inspected the engine bay I'm pretty sure it's a 1.9N/A as:

1) No turbo (although the rocker cover has a red turbo sticker on it, it was previously a 1.6TD so guess it was switched when the engine was switched)
2) Diesel
3) 65mph top speed on the flat and reasonable up hills (55mph)
4) Has a modified accelerator linkage under the engine cover
5) Uses oil like nobodies business!!! :(

Now to the questions...

1) Is the 1Y the only 1.9 N/A available?
2) Where can I find the engine number?

Point 5 is the main reason why I'm writing. I haven't yet had a chance to have a solid investigation into the issue but there is a good spraying of oil on the lower nearside part of the engine. My initial thoughts are that it's the crankshaft pulley oil seal, a bit of a downer really.

Now to the slightly more involved q's....

3) Is this quite likely?
4) Is it an engine out job?
5) If it is a 1Y what's the part number of the seal?
6) Could the seal be fine but the oil pressure getting too high and forcing it out?
7) If 6) is there any way to test this?

Loads of questions and due to our freshness in owning a T25 I'm sure this will be our first post of many and we will be very appreciative of anyone's help.

Kind Regards,

Mike

Smokey cold starts, welcome to diesel T25 world

I recently fitted a 1y engine to replace a 1.6td.To find the scource of oil clean off the engine.Jet washers are good for this but keep it away from the cambelt covers as it can get into the belt tensioner& seize it.Running the engine will dry it off & oil leaks identified better. The rear crankshaft oil seal can located by removing the gearbox & clutch assembly + the flywheel. The front crankshaft oil seal the bottom pulley bolt needs undoing & tools for setting the timing of the engine to consider before removing the belt with the bottom pulley. To remove the seals there are commercial tools available.

Thanks all for your help, I've since read more on 'buying a T25' and am a lot more calm and am now expecting a bit of fluid loss!
