post weekend work and some new questions.

DONE
oil filter + oil
air filter
rotor arm
dizzy cap

starter bush
cleaned and lubed (wd40) starter, joined to alternator with new connector (appears to spin a lot quicker but gets occasionaly click - does need replacing more important jobs first though)
timing TDC now at "about" 1000 does seem to idle now okay(ish)
lubrication air temperature regulator (i think the bit which decides winter or summer)
bypassed idle stabilisation unit (1. it fell off 2. what does it actually do?)
new temperature sender unit
new expansion tank cap
new water level sensor seal


QUESTIONS QUESTIONS
1) Attempted to bleed the water system (again) now cool water appeared to be coming out of the radiator slowly, whilst hot water was in the engine bay?? I am sure I completely opened the bleed screw.. does the bleed screw force open the thermostat? so as to ensure the water is flowing?

2) removed clocks and relevant switches / plugs the pictures below show the pcb circuit board, does anyone know if this is why I used to get intermittent fuel gauge working and illuminated dash eg indicator lights only working if the fuel gauge is working. I have looked in the haynes manual and it states to "wiggle" wires and check earths, shorts, open circuits etc. when I wiggled the main plug sometimes the dash work start working, the handbrake light has been working the whole time. has anyone experienced similar issues? or got some advise related checking the earths, testing relays etc?

sorry those images are rubbish the first one shows you the corroded / burnt out track. I have tried cleaning up the connectors, but the speedo clock looks like it has been burnt? would that be a short and might a bad bad or whilst driving the short improves?

Starter motor replacement looks a good bet to me. Ours failed last year while we were away - solenoid wires corroded right through. Cost me £90 fitted. Boy what a difference starting was after. First turn of the key I realized just how knackered the old started must have been!

Replace it you know it makes sense, then you can cross something off you large list!

radiator fan sorted

timing sorted (??? I hope)

water system bled

battery and charging okay.

new starter can wait a little while longer for this

warm up cut out ( who cares if I get a new starter :) )

new clocks - well second hand, anyway still awaiting arrival.

return all the bits back to the places I took them off

get daughter to actually clean it properly inside for once.

external bodywork (well the rusty bits anyways)

found 12v heavy green wire was not joined to battery, so the leasuire battery charging is working now.. :)

replaced clocks, then bits of clocks then just the flexible PCB, still has intermittent fault, and I have a table full of useless bits and bobs from the other set. becarful if you ever muck around with these clocks they are old and brittle you can replace screws for electrical tape most of the time but make sure you dont break the 14 pin sockets plastic tounge otherwise you will be a bit stuck.

replaced starter motor, it is worth it for the confidence that when the van is hot it will start it again, still seems to half turn first the turn quicker, the only thing I feel this could be would be the flywheel, but I am not going there.

took dylan out for a relaxing drive for 25 minutes or so, very smooth and happy. we are maybe looking to sell him and get a caravan instead, but I am worried my wife thinks that I am getting too attached now :worried:

I am surprised that it didn't seem to cut out when it was on a journey, but coughs splutters and dies on the drive if it is simply being started for tests etc.

still need some external tidy up and get all my tools out the poor thing.
