white in coolant

Post by clartsonly »

whilst bleeding the water system after changing the temperature sensor, when I dropped the throttle off the fast idle cam, there was a couple of inches of white residue in the expansion tank and some bubbles. is this really bad or should I simply play it by ear on a couple of test drives?

I am hoping that I put my oily fingers into the expansion tank to check the temperature and water level. and the white came from the oil on my fingers not from the engine

This wouldn't happen to be an automatic would it ? It's either ATF leaking into the cooling system from a shot ATF cooler or oil getting into the coolant from a shot oil cooler or similar.

has it been stood fer a while? i ask because you get water absorption in the oil from condensation and this then mixes into like froth when the oil gets hot and floats to the top.
it used to be quite common in the good old days

the only thing that did happen whilst I was bleeding it is as soon as the water level started shooting down. eg bolt missing from the radiator

I legged it around to the front of the van to put in the bolt then back around to the back to top up the missing coolant, maybe it lost too much coolant at 2000 rpms in those 20 seconds? I will check it again at the weekend.

Thanks, I can't stop now. I would like to have the option of using it or selling it but not it falling to peices on the driveway :D
