Heating

Wife is taking me to up-helly-a in Shetland next year.

She is worried however about the lack of heating in our van.

Can anyone suggest something to keep us warm. I want to 'cuddle' but she is not too keen

Is there some sort of electric heating we can buy?

DDD hi,
Skip loads of options for you. Seriously, skip loads.

Strongly suggest large cuppa and a 'search' for 'heating'.

You will get many options, opinions and advice on pro's and con's.

Honestly, there is not a simple answer because of the quantity of options, but once settled on a type, then its a doddle.

DDD, going to Shetland in January with no heating, you must be mad, mind you when they set the Viking longboat on fire that might keep you warm,

Aye looks like I will have to do a bit of a search, just wondered if anyone had something they could not do without.

JK have some that we could plug in.

Have bought a couple of hot water bottles

i don't know if we'd manage without propex, had it for 3 years now and it's great, though to be fair, i think i'd struggle with out the oven, i've only had that about a year and i thought it was silly when i first got it!

Propex is something i aim to do in the future, more pressing things first

Like a paint job, alloys, a decent music system and so on.

I mean how hard is it to put on another jumper

cos they will keep you warm

get an ebber fitted or a propex .. loads of heat .. as for those plug in 12v thing that JK and the like sell.. save your money cos they are rubbish

A decent electric heater draws about 1500 watts... That's 128 amps at 12 volt! You can't carry enough battery to run it and your alternator is rated at about 1/2 that with engine running.

Get the picture?

Electric heat is worthless unless you have a mains hookup.

IMHO, get a Propex or Eber now. Get wheel/tires/paint next spring/summer when you don't need heat.

If you are planning on going winter camping without a site with a hook up,a Propex or Eber is the only way to go.

Laura has booked a spot in a campsite, the only thing it has is a hook up. No showers

We have to use the local sports centre for that, but at least we will be warm.

Is this your fist trip to Up-Helly-Aa DDD ?, if so I am sure you will enjoy, it is a fantastic site, but remember, the festval lasts for a straight 24 hrs and those Shetlanders drink for 24 hrs, done it a coulpe of times a few years ago,

Aye it is, looking forward to it.

As you say they are up all night, Wednesday is a public holiday, as everyone is sleeping the night before off or still drinking.

What is the format Tam, I have heard you have to be 'invited' to a hall, then you move from one to another. 15 hall's in total

If you find one of the halls you will generaly be asked if you want to come in, bottle in hand of course, then just follow them around,
