1.6TD - exhaust (???) noise every 4th stroke

Spoke to my mechanic about this, he said inlet manifold has to come off to get access to exhaust manifold nuts. Occasionally the inlet manifold studs are stuck in the head, so he has known one situation when it was a cylinder head off job!

Am I doing damage by driving round with it leaking? (apart from damage to passer bys ears!)

Not so much on a diesel as you would on a petrol (burn exh valve), though I'm not sure it won't slowly erode the head/manifold mating face.

As you say, until you start the job, you can't be sure how far you'll get before real help might be needed to complete it - a tricky one.
