the difference is in the width of the gear. the correct one for me was the smaller width gear. i had the longer gear one and burnt five starters out!! the starter solenoid sat about a quarter turn out from where it should have been.
the bush is a small copper bush which sits in the belhousing. i split mine with a hacksaw blade and folded it so it could be pulled out. just tap the new one home.
good luck chap!!

We all need to stick together and help each other.
Remember the 10 Commandments I think we can add diesel to no8
Followers of Volkswagenism have Ten (10) Commandments which to follow.
Thou shall gather at Volkswagen shows and events, and join with clubs and travel in with the packs.
Thou shall speak of Volkswagen several times daily and of a positive manner.
Thou shall enjoy the daily task involved in maintaining and clean one's Volkswagen.
Thou shall take interest in Germany. Interest in it's people and it's culture.
Thou shall spread the good gospel of Volkswagen, being of fine quality and dependability, to the blind man.
Thou shall learn, and take into study, Volkswagen's history.
Thou shall stand up for the values and beliefs of Volkswagen - of company, employees, owners, and of the fellow Volkswagenist.
Thou shall never pass another Volkswagen in distress. Love thy brother of both water and air.
Thou shall try to make one pilgrimage to Wolfsburg in one's life. By one's self or of representation.
Thou shall love thy Volkswagen. Even if the child is sick, one shall love that child no less. Shower it with the gifts of custom accessories.

uphill like a scalded ferret on crack well almost
following on the original theme for this tread uphill performance was lacking after listening to others a lot brighter than me and taking their advice my van has just flown up our hill in third and dare I say it I got it into 4th near the top WOW it used to be second then drop it in first near the top . What was the reason for this change it was down to the top carb gasket leaking. Such a simple fix and a massive advantage . Its incredible how much the van has improved it drives like new well nearly new .
I didnt replace them coz I didnt have any but removed them and noticed the non float end was black I put a little gasket goo on and refitted the van is running much better I have no performance advantage on the flat but uphill is a world apart from what it was .
Sorry to bore you but its a big thing in my sad life as the trip to deva at the weekend is all hills so wasnt looking forward to being overtaken by cyclists but now Im looking forward to the trip. Just need to sort the brakes for the return trip its all downhill
