Electrolux rm122b FRIDGE

Post by jagsman »

Here's a thing...during the grand refurb necessitated by events catalogued in detail on the blog (below) we've had a think about our fridge situation. We have the above model and have only ever used it as a "coolbox" by putting frozen water bottles in and allowing "ambient cooling" (!?!) to take place...never wanted to use it on gas.

However...

it appears that from web research and a scan of the instruction manual it CAN run off 12v (main vehicle battery NOT leisure battery)

QUESTIONS:

HOW does that work?

Where is the "option" switch? (ie - how do you make sure it doesn't draw power ALL the time?)

How do I rig this back up as it's never been working in my lifetime/ownership of the bus? Should I consult a local auto electrician/caravan service place?

Cheers and thanks,

Bryan

the fridge does not run off the battery alone it would flatten it in 10 mins...it would run off a split charge system from the alternator more details in the wiki
in my opinion gas is the best option for the absorption type fridge

I'm sure someone will inform you of more about switching it on and off

12V when on the move, from the main battery and engine must be running
gas when parked up
240V when hook-up available.
Keep it real.

I have just fitted a RM122 and there is no switch for changing it to 12v/Gas you need to wire one in.

Which camper do you have (eg. Autohomes, etc) ?

My Electrolux RM122 runs off gas, 12V (via the alternator) and off a 12V transformer (built into the mains breakers box).

The best option as mentioned above is to run it off gas during the day (with a skylight or window slightly open). Check the pilot light to make sure that it's lit (you can see the pilot light by looking into the inspection flap at the bottom of the fridge next to the starter.

I don't know why you dont like using it on gas but I think they have safety switches on them that turn the gas off if it blows out, thermo couple ? check your model to see if it has it fitted, they work best on gas, if you wanted to be extra safe you could turn it off at night, van must be level ish to use on gas.

The RM122 does have the thermocouple (gas safety shut-off device) fitted.

12v operation

Post by perro »

I have this unit in my van. It works great off gas when parked . For 12v operation you will need to wire it up via a relay and a seperate switch . The unit will draw about 7amps or so when first switched on so it will drain the battery very quickly . To wire it up if you look on the back of the unit you will see what looks like a probe coming out of the vertical tube where the flue connects to with two black wires connect these via a relay and use the switch to switch the relay and away you go . If the units an early one the flue will be on the left a new one will have it on the right. This unit wont run on 240v unless you run it through a transformer but bear in mind its pulling at least 7 to 9 amps so it would have to be a big beast .

If you have any problems or you need some help with it just give me a shout.
